Résumés

  • Hogan first saves, and then helps to escape, a German radio expert who the Germans want dead.
  • Late one night, the Gestapo arrive at Stalag 13 and rouse Colonel Klink from his sleep. Hogan, who observed their arrival gathers the Heroes to listen-in on the coffee pot receiver as Major Stern informs Klink that they seek to arrest two recent staff additions, Captain Metzler and Sgt Holtz. The Commandant tells him that the Sergeant is on guard duty, while the Captain is on leave. As the meeting breaks up, Hogan moves to the sink periscope to follow the activity. He soon witnesses the Gestapo gunning down Holtz in the compound. The following day, Hogan has Lebeau and Carter procure the personnel files of the two men in hopes of determining why the Gestapo wants them dead. All that the Heroes could gather from the files was that both men were communications experts and were attached to the same headquarters group in Berlin. Hogan has the local underground locate Metzler at his girlfriend's apartment in Hammelburg. He then visits the Captain to ascertain what the German high command deems so necessary to silence.—Harry Tumilson

Synopsis

  • At the start, Schultz is walking guard by Klink's car, right shoulder arms. There are curtains drawn on the rear windows of the car. Hogan and Hilda are in the back seat, getting romantic. A car with Gestapo comes in; one officer, Major Stern, in a business suit, and two enlisted guards. Hogan looks out the back window to see what is going on. They go into Klink's quarters and interrupt him while he is sleeping. After they talk for a bit, Schultz comes in and says that the Gestapo have come in. Klink thanks him for the report. Stern asks about two men who were recently transferred to STALAG 13, Sergeant Holtz and Captain Metzler. Klink says that Holtz is on duty, and Metzler is on leave for a week. Stern tells Klink that they are implicated in the black market; Klink insists that they have not been here long enough to do anything in that regard.

The Gestapo goes out to see Sergeant Holtz. He is on guard at the front gate. Stern has Holtz follow him to his car. The two Gestapo guards shoot Holtz. Hogan is watching through the sink periscope. He sees Holtz get shot by the Gestapo. he is abhorred by it, and mentions it to the other men in the barracks.

The next day, Hogan goes to Klink's office, asking about the gunfire he heard last night. Hogan asks about trigger-happy guards; Klink says that it wasn't that. Hogan asks Klink about rumors, about Klink going to the Russian front. He then asks if the gunfire was Holtz being shot by the Gestapo. Klink says that he is not giving any information. Hogan tells Klink 'Kommandant, you're dismissed'. Klink starts to leave the room, but then realized this is his office. He gets mad at Hogan and throws him out.

Hogan talks with the men in the compound about the events. Klink says nothing, and he is afraid of something. Hogan says that something is rotten in Germany, besides Hitler. Hogan tells Carter and LeBeau to get the personnel files on Holtz and Metzler.

Carter and LeBeau go to Klink's office. Schultz and Hilda are there in the outer office. Carter says that they are there to paint the filing cabinet. While Carter distracts Schultz, LeBeau looks through the cabinet to get the personnel files, and takes the files that he wants. Klink comes out, and asks what is going on. Carter says that they came here to paint the cabinet. After some discussion, Klink looks at the cabinet, and gives his approval

LeBeau takes the files back to the barracks. Baker takes pictures of the files and has them developed. After Hogan takes a quick look at them to see if they are readable, he has Carter and LeBeau get them back.

Carter and LeBeau go back to Klink's office, Carter distracts Schultz while LeBeau puts the files back. They then start to leave. Schultz asks about painting the cabinet. Carter says that Klink changed his mind about painting the cabinet. Schultz says that Klink didn't tell him.

Back in the barracks,Hogan is reading the information on the pictures from the files. Hogan says that Holtz is a radio specialist; Baker says the same thing about Metzler. They were both here assigned at the same time, and came here from the same communications company in Berlin. They were posted to STALAG 13 together. Hogan conjectures that they were posted here so they can be shot later, when it is convenient for the Gestapo. Holtz can't say anything because he is dead; but Metzler might. Looking through the files, Hogan says that Metzler is a bachelor; on a week's leave, possibly nearby, may be looking for girls. Newkirk mentions that there are few 'birds' in town. Hogan asks Newkirk if he has been sneaking out. Newkirk says 'On my honor'; Hogan says 'On your honor, yes or no'. Newkirk gives a non-answer, saying that he wants to resign from this conversation.

At night Hogan goes out to meet a local agent. She comes on a bicycle. Hogan flashes a light twice as a signal and she flashes her bicycle light in return. Hogan tells Carter and LeBeau to spread out and give them cover. Hogan is in commando black. He talks with the agent about Metzler, and describes him. She says that she does not know him off hand. She will look and ask around about him.

Later, Baker is sending a message in code and gets a response. Hogan is in the compound playing basketball with the men. Baker comes out and gives him a message. Hogan leaves the game for the conversation. Metzler is staying at a hotel, 14 Gardenstrasse, with his girlfriend.

Hogan goes to the hotel, to Metzler's room. Metzler and his girlfriend are there. Hogan mentions what happened, and tells Metzler that he is next. Metzler mentions Sergeant Krebbs, a third man, who was also shot by the Gestapo. After some discussion, Hogan has to disclose some things. He asks Metzler to look out the window; the car across the street has one of Hogan's men who is trained to shoot by the RAF. If anything happens to Hogan, the same thing will happen to Metzler and his girlfriend. He tells Metzler and his girlfriend that he is stationed at STALAG 13, that is where he fights the war. He tells them a few other things. Suddenly, there is a knock on the door. Message for Captain Metzler. The girlfriend opens the door, and Newkirk and the Underground agent come in. The Gestapo are all around, looking for Metzler. The Underground agent shows a picture of Metzler; Metzler says that it is a copy of the picture in his personnel file. On the back is a stamp from the Gestapo; Newkirk says that it means 'dead or alive'. Hogan says that Metzler and his girlfriend will be taken to a safe house. Newkirk asks what happened. Hogan tells Newkirk and the others that he had to disclose things to Metzler. Newkirk says to Metzler and his girlfriend 'I now pronounce you inseparable'.

At the safe house, Hogan wants Metzler to talk. Hogan says that he can get Metzler out of Germany; Metzler want to know how, but Hogan can't tell him. Metzler gives some information, but then clams up. Hogan has to prove what he says. Metzler wants a notice in the London Times: Karl, Mother is very sick, please come home, must be signed John. Metzler and Holtz were restoring a most important communications center; where, he won't say until Hogan proves himself.

Baker is seen sending a message to London by code. That night, Carter, Baker, and LeBeau go out to the drop zone, and get the newspaper.

The next day, Hogan shows the paper to Metzler. Metzler is amazed that Hogan can do this in so short a time. He sees the notice in the paper, and agrees to give the information. Newkirk takes the paper, and Hogan tells Metzler that he is homesick. Hogan wants to take Metzler and his girlfriend to camp. Metzler does not want to go. Hogan grabs Metzler, points a pistol in his face, and says that he will 'go to England my way, or die my way'. Metzler agrees to go.

At camp, in the tunnel, the Underground agent makes a phone call to the Gestapo who are at STALAG 13. She gets them to leave by telling them Metzler's old room number; they get in the car and go into town. After their car passes, Schnitzer and his dog truck come out of the woods and enter STALAG 13. They go to the dog cage. Schultz wants to know what is going on. Hogan comes out and distracts Schultz while Metzler and the others are taken down into the tunnel through the doghouse entrance. Hogan gives Schultz some chocolates, and talks with him a bit until the evolution is finished. Hogan gets Schultz to give him the keys to Klink's car.

Down in the tunnel, Metzler is being fitted with civilian clothes and paperwork. He also has his picture taken by Carter for the phony papers. He tells Hogan about the MAYBACH radio stations. MAYBACH 1 is OKH, the Army station; MAYBACH 2 is OKW, Hitler's command radio. All orders are sent from there by radio. Power cables are 6 feet underground, the generating station is located underground and safe from bombing. He gives Hogan some other information.

Hogan gives a message to Baker to send to London. After talking with the men a bit, Hogan remembers that he kept Hilda waiting in Klink's car. Business before pleasure; this is business, as he invested 3 candy bars in Schultz to have the arrangement. He does not want to stand her up. Hogan quickly leaves the tunnel and takes the ladder up to the barracks.

At the end, Hogan and Hilda are in the back seat of Klink's car, with the curtains drawn, making out. Klink comes out of his office and wants to take the car out; he wants the keys from Schultz, but Schultz does not have them. Hogan and Hilda sneak out through the far back door so Klink does not see them. Klink is missing his keys, and starts looking for them. Hogan comes up and gives Klink his keys. Klink takes the keys and gets in the car. He asks Hogan what he is doing out of the barracks at this time; Hogan says that he is looking for Klink's keys. Klink says that this is a good reason, and drives out. Hogan tells Schultz to get another car, as he can't keep the lady waiting.
