This is the first episode directed by Adrian Paul.
This is the only episode that has Mac as a Pre-Immortal for the majority of his flashbacks.
When Kanwulf is shown outside there is a raven that seems to be following him. Kanwulf still worships the old Norse Gods, i.e. offering prayer to Odin. In Norse mythology, Odin had two ravens called Hugin and Munin that sat on his shoulders who could "see and hear all".
Some of the exterior shots were really filmed in Scotland, at the end of season 3 when the crew was still based in Paris. The Scottish shots are bare and wintry, while the Vancouver shots feature lush greenery.
The backstory of this episode is remarkably similar to the origin story of Jacob Kell in Highlander Endgame. In the movie, Kell was responsible for Connor's Mother's death. This is also one of very few times that Connor Macleod is mentioned in the series after his appearance in the pilot episode.
