- McGarrett is awakened at 3:00 A.M. by a phone call from a past girlfriend, who hangs up before he is fully awake. The girlfriend then goes back to her husband's beach house and finds him dead from multiple blows to the head. Pieces of evidence around the crime scene implicate the woman, and eventually McGarrett is forced to arrest her (amid numerous flashbacks to their romance when McGarrett was a Navy lieutenant -- there are scenes filmed at the U.S.S. Arizona memorial where the woman's brother died on December 7, 1941). But not only does McGarrett have to fight his own emotional involvement, he has to check out at least three other possible suspects in the killing: the husband's law partner, his daughter from a previous marriage and the daughter's hot-shot attorney fiancé' who knows a great deal about crime scenes.—Peter Harris
- The former fiancee of Steve McGarrett is the prime suspect in her husband's murder. The couple had been seen having an argument at a party earlier in the evening. This lady has no alibi, only claiming that she was alone walking on the beach at the time of her husband's death. There are many flashbacks in the episode relating to how McGarrett, then in the Navy and this lady met, dated, and fell in love at an earlier time in Hawaii. This makes it even more painful for McGarrett as he has to interrogate the lady, treating her just as if she was any other potential suspect in a violent crime. At one point, Danny Williams even suggests that McGarrett's judgement in the case is being comprised by the feelings that he still has for this lady - and that perhaps just Danny, Chin Ho, and Kono should work the case. The woman in question, played by the well-known actress of that era, Diana Muldaur has a strained relationship with her step-daughter which only adds tension to the plot. Martin Sheen, who appeared in the Season Two Episode "Cry Lie" also has a part in this episode as the step-daughter's fiancee.
