Morgan kills Oliver, an apparent case of a grief-stricken husband taking vengeance. But Five-O's probe shows the case is more complicated.—Bill Koenig

Synopsis

  • A patrol officer`s wife is found murdered, strangled, and the Five-O team are taking the lead on the investigation. The patrol officer, Lew Morgan (a young Tom Skerritt), was a childhood friend of Danny`s and had married another school friend / sweetheart.

Morgan gets anxious and asks Danny to get him on the case of his wife`s killer. McGarrett is treating this as a special homicide since it involves a cop, but for now he is suspicious about the motive and has not ruled out any suspects including Morgan.

The stake-out at Morgan`s house turns up an island local Kaikili who has a key to the property. He admits down at Five-O HQ he was having an affair with Mrs. Morgan which shocks Danny, he cannot believe his best friends from school had marital problems.

This leads the Five-O investigation toward a flim-flam man Gary Oliver who uses women for support. They go to a known acquaintance of Olivers, Annette Barnes, but he escapes as Five-O comes to the house. The woman is not very cooperative or helpful with the investigation.

Meanwhile, Morgan has learned of this and is closing in on Oliver. Five-O discover Oliver also socialized and wooed a socialite Mrs. Hadwell from Kaikili`s statement, but when McGarrett goes to her residence after arranging a meeting with her, her house servant tells McGarrett she is out and takes a message.

Morgan has tracked Oliver to Gloria, another of his "lady friends" and roughs her up to tell him where Oliver is. Danny confronts an intoxicated Morgan to appraise him about a complaint Gloria filed, but Morgan uses the friendship with Danny and the matter of his wife`s death as an emotional crutch to deflect the accusation.

Morgan gets to Oliver, confronts him even though Oliver denies killing Mrs. Morgan, and Morgan utters "You caused her death" and fatally shoots Oliver. He calls HPD and Danny and McGarrett arrive as well. McGarrett scolds Morgan for taking matters into his own hands, and tells him that the likely reduced charges he faces (2nd degree murder with the circumstances of killing his wife`s lover) will still leave a cloud in the public`s eye about HPD.

Back at Five-O as they are wrapping up the paperwork, McGarrett has a visitor, Mrs. Hadwell. She tells McGarrett that Oliver could not have killed Mrs. Morgan, that he was with her the whole night and in fact had been there when McGarrett came to call on her. Now McGarrett knows Morgan killed his own wife out of jeolousy, and has him brought into the office to confront him with Mrs. Hadwell`s statement and accuse him of two first degree murders, his wife and Oliver.
