Hamish Macbeth

Sommari

  • Distraught over his dog's death, Hamish charges after the two men responsible. Sure that he means murder, the men of Lochdubh try to reach him first.

Descrizione

  • A devastating auto accident in Lochdubh leads Hamish to the solution of a cold case. (From the BBC Video case.)

A surrealist episode weaving together heavy premonitions, a mysterious stranger, two escaped convicts, and breathtaking scenery.

Hamish comes across a mysterious woman who, having had car trouble, is sitting at the foot of a lush hill obscured by mist with her white Westie that Hamish learns is also named Jock, like his own beloved dog. Hamish asks if he can help, and she oddly replies, "No. Its finished." She abruptly proclaims, "I'm afraid that we are going to have to go in now, Hamish, to Lochdubh." Hamish drives her into town. Shortly after arriving, he learns that his own Wee Jock was run over by two men in a gray car. The townsfolk say that it seems as if the car swerved in the direction of the dog.

The men driving the car are two escaped convicts. The guilty conscious of one causes an apparition to appear in the form of a young lad. It is this image that the driver swerves to avoid as he sadly runs over Hamish's Wee Jock.

In town directly before the accident, TV John explained at Rory's store that he had a warning premonition of a car speeding by the pub.

The town pulls together in of support Hamish in his grief at the pub that evening. The quirky lead singer of the band that night goes into a trance and has an image of a white dog barking in the darkness.

The escapees coincidentally run out of petrol at a road sign, which the old man with the white hair identifies as the sign that "the voices told him about" as the starting point for their new life of devotion and prayer. It is his plan that the pair will live in the hills in the elements as monks and build a monastery as repentance for committing the Greatest Sin. Their new life is christened by a torrential thunder storm that night.

A hungover Hamish wakes up on his couch. The mysterious woman, Rose Hart, comes in from walking in the rain. She explains that she has seen the men in the gray car and they are in the hills. Significantly, one of the men has white hair. Hamish gathers his gear to find the men. In the hills, Hamish hears Jock's bark over the rain and thunder.

TV John has a premonition of Hamish shooting one of the men in retribution for running over Wee Jock. The next morning the townsmen gather to follow Hamish north.

The escapee's faith is put to the test as they are unable catch any food . . . until a can of beans falls from the sky as they pray for the lord's help.

Hamish meets up with the escapees and disarms them by telling them that he will guide them to Wales, as they wish, and show them how to survive in the wild. Hamish speaks with the younger one about the mental status of his pal. Francis hopes that Harry will snap to his senses. Later that night, Harry has another vision of the young lad. Hamish finds out that the pair ran over the boy in a get-away from a warehouse robbery. Harry put the boy in the van covered by his jacket and submerged the van. No one was told about the boy or the van, because an id card was left in the jacket pocket.

Hamish leaves the pair during the night, but returns with breakfast. The townsmen close in on the trio and send one ahead as a scout. He gets lost returning, but eventually returns to his group with news that Hamish is going to kill the escapees as he has seen a gun. As the men are crossing the loch on a rope bridge, Hamish pulls his gun on them. The men are hanging on the rope as in TV John's premonition when the townsmen arrive and convince Hamish not to shoot the last rope. The men reveal where the van is submerged and it is retrieved. The mother of the lad who was killed is the same image of the woman who Hamish saw earlier. The mother, of course, had a sister named Rose who was watching the boy when he disappeared. She died in a climing accident.

The parents own white Westies, including puppies, gave the last puppy to Hamish in gratitude for his services.

The show ends with TV John playing woeful tunes on the bagpipe at Wee Jok's grave on Mount Ben for Hamish and Jock II. The townsfolk can hear the dirge and have a moment of silence. Wee Jock, Rose, and her nephew appear for one last moment.
