After Hester falls foul of the mayor for giving his daughter low marks at school William saves the situation by getting drunk with him. Next day they attend the village fete where Hester wins a leg of mutton in a raffle- though it turns out to be a live sheep. She wants to keep it as a pet but William and the Trendles disagree, leading to William having another drinking session with Dax to persuade him to put the sheep in his flock.
