Real-life Christopher Foyle, current owner of the famous Foyle's bookshop in London, makes a cameo appearance in this episode as a bookseller.
The sinking of Convoy PQ17 in July 1942 was the inspiration for "Bad Blood." Of the 37 ships that began the journey from Iceland to Russia, only 11 got through. The rest were sunk by the German navy. 153 merchant marines were lost.

The murder weapon is a veterinary trocar. Cattle can develop bloat, trapped gas in their stomachs, severe enough to kill the animal. A trocar is punched through the animal's side, into its stomach, and the high pressure gas is released. Rather like stabbing a car tire.

The real-life Christopher Foyle (of the bookshop) must be the man who walks past DCS Foyle as he is standing outside his front door and says something about a book.

Spoilers

The trivia item below may give away important plot points.

The confusion between two names, that may indicate the killer, was used by Margery Allingham in her mystery series written between the 1930s and 60s. I'm sure Anthony Horowitz has read her books.
