"Vampire/The Lady and the Longhorn"
is an episode of Fantasy Island starring
Ricardo Montalban, Hervé Villechaize, and Lloyd Bochner.
Method actor Leo Drake prepares for his next role by becoming said role - a vampire; and cosmetics queen Vera Templeton must marry for money in order to shore up her failing business.
Let's get the mediocre segment out of the way, as this one starred the annoying Eva Gabor as a former wealthy woman looking to marry a rich man, and he ends up being veteran actor Jack Elam, who actually has a few funny scenes. She winds up marrying her butler anyway, oh joy. Now on to the much better, and probably my favorite segment of the series so far, simply called "Vampire", which stars Robert Reed(Leo Drake)as a method actor looking to play the famous villain as his fantasy; Julie Sommars plays the obedient and faithful wife Carmen, who is afraid the role may make him believe he really is a vampire. I also feel the need to mention Erica Yohn, who plays "Erica"; she was just as creepy as Drake. I'm a fan of 70's vampires, and a favorite of mine came out a year later in 1979, called Salem's Lot, but I digress. The story itself could've been a bit creepier and less corny, and seeing a vampire actually walking/running through the town doesn't conjure up much fear to me, but you could tell Reed was having fun here and the scenery was done fairly well with cool full moon and misty evening shots; the indoor shots of the vampire's castle were also slick. There's also a story-within-a-story that's quickly thrown together, but really added to this plot. I really enjoy the darker segments of this show and I hope there's many more to come as I watch this show currently on cable on a weekly basis.
