- T'Pol finds unusual neutrino readings on a planet with a preindustrial society.
- Enterprise discovers a Minshara-class planet populated by over 500 million Akaali. The society is preindustrial, but Archer and Trip can't wait to do some exploring. T'Pol strongly advises against it, she fears cultural contamination, but Archer thinks some make-up by Phlox will do the trick. Then T'Pol picks up neutrino emissions from the surface, most likely coming from an antimatter reactor. When Archer, Trip, Hoshi and T'Pol investigate, they meet Riann. She tells people got severely sick one month after a certain Garos started a curiosity shop.—Arnoud Tiele (imdb@tiele.nl)
- The Enterprise finds three different phenomena to research: a supernova; three neutron stars; and a pre-industrial planet with 500 million people. T'Pol is against the exploration of the Akaali planet fearing cultural contamination, but when she scans the Minshara-class planet, she finds a powerful antimatter reactor hidden underground emitting neutrino. Archer, T'Pol, Trip and Hoshi use makeup to resemble the locals and travel to the planet. They meet the pharmacologist Riann and discover that several Akaali have been sick after the arrival of Garos, the owner of an antique shop. Their further investigation discloses that the aggressive race of the Malurians is exploring minerals in the underground, jeopardizing the health of the Akaalis.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- Enterprise locates a planet inhabited by pre-industrial humanoids (500 MM of them). Scanners also detect technology (An antimatter reactor) which does not correspond with the planet's technological level. Against Sub-Commander T'Pol's recommendation (Since it is against protocol to initiate first contact before a civilization attains warp drive), Captain Archer decides to visit. Going in disguise (to resemble the native population), T'Pol suggests a distant rural landing site. Once in the Akaali city, Ensign Sato notices inhabitants that appear sick. Scans of the reactor lead them to an old curio shop, but they encounter a force-field blocking the way. They are then confronted by a local apothecary, Riann (Diane DiLascio). T'Pol stuns her, and when she awakens, Archer persuades her that he is an investigator from another city. Riann tells Archer that people are dying because of whatever is going on inside the curio shop. The sensors of the Enterprise cant pick up anything specific beyond the force field either.
Archer and Tucker revisit the shop during the day posing as antique collectors. They confront Garos (Wade Anthony Williams), asking him why his DNA is not Akaali. After confirming Tucker and Archer are not natives either, he freely admits his origins: he is part of a survey mission from Malur, and the power source is merely a fabrication unit to provide food and clothes. Archer tells him about the illness, but he claims it is an incurable indigenous virus. Archer takes T'Pol to meet Riann, who has been conducting her observations around the curio shop. T'Pol takes a water sample from Riann's lab. Riann also says that every night the curio shop send deliveries of crated material outside the city. Doctor Phlox discovers that the water near the shop has been contaminated with a highly toxic chemical, Tetracyanate 622 (an industrial lubricant).
Archer and Riann observe the shop at night to try to see what is being delivered to Garos. They follow a man leaving the shop with a delivery. He leaves the crates in a forest clearing from where they are picked by an alien shuttle-pod, and Archer is then attacked by a Malurian. After an intense battle Archer shoots the Malurian. Archer recovers the equipment from the Malurian, including a deactivation unit for the force-field. Under the shop, Archer and Riann then discover that Garos is mining a Veridium isotope (used to primarily manufacture isotopes), and the poisoned water is a by-product. The curio shop covers a vast underground operation with heavy machines that is powered by the antimatter reactor.
Archer manages to deactivate the force-field surrounding the shop and orders the reactor beamed up by Enterprise but the Malurians now have a warship in orbit. The Malurian ships starts to fire on the Enterprise and is vastly superior (Enterprise weapons have no effect). T'Pol beams the power plant into the alien ship's path, using torpedoes to detonate it and crippling their shields. On the planet, Archer provides Riann with the antidote, and assures her that the Vulcans will monitor the planet to ensure the Malurians do not return.
