The fires on Pier 5 caused some legal problems for Emergency's production company. The San Francisco Chronicle reported that the production company was cited for violating local air pollution rules. The article quoted a spokesperson from the Bay Area Air Pollution Control District saying that "It's an illegal burn, no question about it," who also said that open burning is only allowed for a limited set of agricultural purposes, certainly not for adding reality to TV shows. When a rescue crew was using a hydraulic spreader on the door of a crashed car, the window shattered, nearly injuring the driver. Standard fire rescue procedure in consideration of potential injuries from shattering glass is to cover the occupant(s) with a blanket and then preventative lay breaking the glass, which the firemen failed to do.
