Under pressure from King George III to capture The Scarecrow or lose his command, General Pugh plans to use two prisoners, an escapee from the Royal Navy and an American colonist, to trap The Scarecrow.

Despite the fact that the story takes place over a month after the Battle of Lexington and Concord, which began the American Revolution, King George speaks of "rumors of insurrection in America". Since news traveled slowly between the Americas and Europe (a sea voyage requiring 6 weeks was common), it is not surprising that word of the fighting had yet to reach the King. See more
At the end of the film, Dr. Syn and Sir Thomas are discussing Harry's escape from Dover Castle. Dr. Syn mentions that "The Scarecrow" helped Harry when Dr. Syn could not. Phillip Brackenbury was sitting nearby, and had helped Dr. Syn in releasing Harry. If Phillip overheard, it should have told him just who "The Scarecrow" was. See more
