In a Television Academy Foundation interview Jack Klugman said the director Stuart Rosenberg personally offered him the role of Joe Larch. Klugman initially declined because The Defenders apparently had adopted a policy of paying guest stars less than other television show of the era. Rosenberg offered to cast Klugman's real-life wife Brett Somers in the episode at which time Klugman accepted.
