In 1879, Richard Pratt (1840-1924) founded the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Carlyle, PA in an attempt to integrate Indians into White society. He believed that the government needed to "kill the Indian...the save the man," and is the first recorded person to use the phrase "racism." However, modern Indian tribes remember him as the leader of cultural genocide.
