Starting with his 9 Jun 1859 correspondence that was printed in newspapers, Horace Greeley (1811-1872) talked about how rich the mining was, but he also warned prospective miners about the potential hardships they would face if they came to Pike's Peak, particularly if they start out after September. Although subsequent reports were less enthusiastic, he never wrote about a shooting; he also didn't mention anything about panning $200 in 20 minutes.
