      Actual woman he married ! Maria Josefa Jaramillo was fifteen when she married well-known frontiersman Kit Carson on February 3, 1843. The thirty-three year old Carson made Maria's stomach flutter with excitement. He was fearless and decent and in him she saw forever. Maria Josefa was born on March 19, 1828, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. She died after giving birth to his fifth child and Kit being ill died within months of her. Both are buried in Taos, New Mexico in the Kit Carson Cemetery. Kit Carson died at Fort Lyon, Colorado on May 23, 1868. He was 58 years old. His remains are buried in the Kit Carson Cemetery at Taos, New Mexico. Maris was from a well respected Hispanic family that lived in the Santa Fe area for decades, her sister married Mr. Bent of Bent's Fort fame who was a business partner of Kit Carson and introduced them.
