A troy ounce (used to weigh precious metals) weighs about 10% more (~31.1 grams) than an avoirdupois ounce (used to measure nearly everything else; ~28.3 grams).

In 1882, gold was worth $20.67 per troy ounce. $25,000 in gold would weigh about 1209 troy oz, or about 1329 avoirdupois oz; the gold itself would weigh over 80 lbs. Because gold is so dense, it might fight in the saddlebags, but it would be too heavy to carry so easily.
