    • Trivia
John Wesley "Wes" Hardin (1853-1895) was arrested in 1877, and sentenced to 25 years in Huntsville (TX) Prison for murder. In his autobiography, Wes claimed to have killed 42 men, but only 27 can be proven; he did kill a man for snoring, but it may have been accidental. While incarcerated, he taught Sunday School and studied law; his first wife Jane died while was in prison. He was paroled in 1894, and passed the Texas State bar. The following year, he married a 15-year-old girl, and then abandoned her when he moved to El Paso to open a law practice. El Paso Constable John Selman (1839-1896) shot Wes in the head while he was shooting dice in a bar; there is a dispute whether he was shot from behind or in front. It was later said that if it was in the front, it was good shooting; if it was from the back, it was good judgment.
