After Mainwaring complains that the men's saluting is sloppy a runaway barrage balloon appears with the verger clinging onto it. He is rescued and various people, including Godfrey's sister Cissie, are asked to hang onto it until Mainwaring takes charge. Unfortunately for him it takes off in the breeze with him holding onto the other end of its rope, dragging him through trees and a haystack until it stops on a railway bridge. The men are about to secure it but then an officer comes by and in order to perfect the saluting so beloved of Mainwaring they have to let go of the balloon.. . Written by don @ minifie-1

Did You Know?

The bridge the balloon gets stuck on is at the former Wendling Station site on the current A47 near Dereham, Norfolk. The bridge has been replaced by a modern example but the station closed in 1969 and was demolished in 1975 to make way for the A47. See more »

After Mainwaring is taken up by the balloon it is reported to the RAF as an unidentifiable object where the officer in charge says to "scramble 7 squadron". At this time 7 Squadron were flying Stirlings (the first to have this 4-engined heavy bomber) and would be way down on the list of squadrons that you would want to solve this particular problem. User Reviews

It's a classic.
16 January 2020 | by Sleepin_DragonSee all my reviews

Captain Mainwaring is unimpressed by the saluting in the ranks, so he orders a practice run. Meanwhile Mr Yateman FETs tied to a runaway barrage balloon, the men have to hold onto it until help arrives.

It's a hilarious episode, a true classic, that scene where Mainwaring files off is one of the show's funniest moments. The accompanying music works particularly well.

Great to see Miss Godfrey back she was hilarious in a previous episode. I like that The Vicar and Verger have become more involved, the pair are very funny. Mr Hodges commandeering the bikes, so funny.

It's seriously funny. 9/10
