Cheyenne guides a party led by Lt. Colonel George A. Custer into the Black Hills owned by the Sioux which has been forbidden by treaty to survey for a fort location. There's rumors this expedition may be looking for something else - Gold.
In 1874 Cheyenne is riding to meet Lt. Col. George Custer's troop to report as Army Scout when he spots two Indians carrying off a white woman from the nearby Army wagon train. He shoots one and catches the second one who he shoots in hand combat. After the fight he notices the man is white wearing a wig to appear Indian. He tends to the woman Irene Travers who is not severely harmed. Army officers including Maj. Marcus Reno appear complaining about the attack by the Sioux. Irene is a close friend of Reno but she is fascinated with Cheyenne creating a tense situation with Reno. Cheyenne tells the officers that the Indians are not to blame showing them the bodies with wigs. At Fort A. Lincoln Cheyenne reports to Custer who tells him they are going to lead an expedition into the Sioux's Black Hills to look for a potential location for an Army fort. In reality political forces want the expedition to look for gold. Cheyenne tries to help the Indian Commissioner Brady stop the trouble ...Written by
