- Woody and Kelly argue once again about the difference in their monetary status. Kelly wants to live in a house purchased by her father. Woody, not wanting any Gaines money, wants them to live in his old apartment as that's all he can afford. They compromise, which shows them that one side might be more correct in their outlook than the other. Meanwhile, Rebecca's father, Navy Captain Franklin E. Howe, comes to Boston for a visit. A tough-as-nails man and father, he demands that Rebecca, who has screwed up her life in Boston, move back to San Diego into her old room in their home. Apparently, he has controlled her her entire life, including providing her with an allowance. He expects that Rebecca will put up a fight and demand to live her life in Boston as she sees fit. Captain Howe has an ulterior motive for his visit to Boston; if Rebecca knew this true motive, it might change the entire nature of their disagreement.—Huggo
- Now that they've been married for some time, Woody and Kelly have been staying in one of her family's guest houses. Even so, Woody wants Kelly to move into his apartment in the Chinatown area. However, upon seeing where he lives, Kelly is adamant that they accept her family's offer to purchase them a house. Woody stubbornly refuses to take the Gaines family's charity, and claims that Kelly is going to live with him in his apartment.
Kelly angrily says she will, and moves all her furniture in...leaving no room for them to live in the apartment. Woody concedes defeat, and is willing to accept the Gaines family's offer to buy them a house.
Meanwhile, Rebecca's father arrives to visit her. The gang at Cheers soon finds out that Rebecca has often had problems throughout her life, but when her father gets an earful of what she's been up to in Boston (including partially burning down the bar), he comes to a decision that she should return with him to San Diego, and denies her request for a raise in her allowance (which surprises the bar to know she has been getting).
In response, Rebecca throws a tantrum and locks herself in the bar's office. Her father explains to the others that he's using reverse psychology on his daughter, expecting her to refuse to give in to his requests, and stay in Boston and give up her allowance. He is further shocked when she comes out of the office packed, and ready to go.
Realizing his plan has failed, her father gives in to her requests for a raise in her allowance, and he leaves, saddened that his plans (and possible ability to ever retire) have failed.
After he leaves, Rebecca admits to Carla that her plan was also partially concocted by her Mom, and that they both split the allowance she receives.
