Coach Returns to Action (#1.9)
ComedyFan20102 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
There is a new young lady that moved to Coache's building. He brings her to the bar and is attracted to her, but even though Diane tells him to make a move he has trouble to. Especially when she keeps on rejecting Sam who is usually great with ladies. Well, at the end Coach still manages to do it with his old secret trick.

A bit more boring of an episode than usual. Weird, I like Coach as character a lot, but it is the episodes with him as main character that I liked the least so far. Hope this will change.

Still the ending of the episode was just great with him getting the girl by rolling down the stairs.

Sam Gets Shut Down
Hitchcoc5 August 2019
An attractive young woman moves into Coach's apartment building. They are just becoming friends. She comes to the bar because her heat hasn't been turned on. Coach is attracted to her but she is much younger than he is. Sam sees her and starts putting on the moves which leads to conflict because Coach is keeping his feelings to himself. Not a terribly funny one but OK. The bet scene is when a little schoolgirl comes into the bar and Diane thinks this is the woman Coach is interested in.

A bit of a misstep but there's still some good moments

Coach is, by far, one of the most lovable characters on Cheers, maybe on all of TV. What he's not, however, is a ladies' man. This episode isn't bad but it feels like a miscalculation on the part of the writers, a step in the wrong direction.

It's not a terrible premise - Coach is attracted to a pretty neighbour who happens to be a lot younger than him, and Sam (of course) tries to hit on her himself. But the age gap is pretty big (Nicholas Colosanto was almost twice the age of the actress playing Gina) and frankly, it just seems out,of character for Coach. Diane and Carla's attempt to encourage him seem more patronizing than genuine.

That said, Gina is pretty nice and it's fun seeing her shoot down Sam. As well, there's a bit of fun business with a thirsty tour guide trying to warm up, and Norm's annoyance at having to dress up to use Melville's bathroom. All in all not a terrible episode but it sticks out in an otherwise perfect season.

What were the writers thinking?

"Coach Returns to Action", where Coach is endearingly embarrassed by his crush on his new neighbour, Nina (played by a woman in her early 30s), inexplicably, however, Diane encourages him to ask her out. Coach's crush was believable but not Diane egging him on, such a strange choice, forget father, Coach is like a grandfather, loveable, just not in that way.

I'm giving the episode 3 stars and not 1 because I love early Cheers, even when the story's shaky, the atmosphere is special, the wit is always present, and this head scratcher of an episode isn't without it's stand out moments - take for example, a pristine Diane and a dishevelled Carla rallying together to give a pep talk to Coach, in Cheers' shabby men's bathroom no less!

This is a Coach episode, and Nicholas Colasanto is wonderful, you love him as Coach despite the material the confused writers gave him (and Shelley) to work with. It's worth watching for him.

The ending of the episode has Coach pulling a sad-sack trick to have Nina take pity on him, and then what? We don't know, it isn't made clear. Again, Coach makes sense this episode, Diane encouraging him to humiliate himself, makes none.
