    Operation long shadow

Burke is sent to Paris to locate the missing son of an Algerian general. The boy disappeared shortly after someone murdered his father's girlfriend by pushing her off the Eiffel Tower.

When Burke arrives, he finds himself involved in a bizarre plot to assassinate Charles de Gaulle that takes him across the French countryside.

A combination of "Day of the Jackal" and "The Man Who Knew Too Much" really work well here with Burke ( Gene Barry) taking on the bad guys by using his wits and fists. It's quite exciting with the finger constantly on the pulse - it's less Harry Palmer and more Bond/Danger man with fights, shootouts, diabolical plans, an exploding chateau and dames. Gene Barry is smooth as ever. I know that the series changing from detective to spy isn't popular with viewers, but this is a solid attempt nevertheless.

    • Trivia
The plot of this episode--a carefully planned assassination of French general and leader Charles de Gaulle --anticipated the 1971 novel The Day of the Jackal by Frederick Forsyth. That bestselling thriller was made into the 1973 film The Day of the Jackal (1973).

The Man: First of all, your cover: Tourist. The worst kind. Playboy, unattached, irresponsible, and very rich.

Capt. Amos Burke: I think I might be able to handle that.
