A ruthless meat packer named Emit Whitney schemes to monopolize the local cattle industry by buying the rail line that is used to transport the cattle to market, then force the cattle farmers to sell at deeply reduced prices. Ben, championing the smaller farmers and knowing that Whitney could drive many of the Cartwrights' friends out of business, devises a plan to drive Whitney out - even if it means he will lose the Ponderosa if his plan fails. The actual business of raising cattle is at the focus of this Bonanza story. It is after all what the Ponderosa is there for and what makes the Cartwright and others a living.
Walter Barnes who is a meat packer has come to Virginia City with a ridiculously low offer for everybody's cattle. Maybe the Cartwrights are in a position to tell him what to do, but the smaller ranchers can't.
This man is playing real hardball with the ranchers. Barnes also has a pair gunfighters to back him up. But Lorne Greene has a plan to play some hardball right back at him. But it better work because the Ponderosa itself and the Cartwright ownership of same is at stake.
In this episode watch Ben Cartwright play hardball with the best of them.
