Did You Know?

Tom Baker has told Doctor Who (1963) fans that this was "a pretty miserable experience" because he became annoyed by the "highly opinionated" Rowan Atkinson telling him how to do it. Atkinson wanted Baker to play Captain Rum as a crashing bore and underplay it instead of the more extravagant performance he had given in rehearsals. Baker took his advice and delivered a different performance for the technical run in the afternoon of the recording. However, the producer and director were horrified by this different interpretation, thinking he was ill, and told him to go back to playing it the way it was rehearsed. Baker said Atkinson never spoke to him again and he skipped the party after the show to avoid being snubbed by Atkinson. Baker said his only consolation has been the repeat fees because it has been shown so many times. See more »

[Blackadder shows Baldrick a potato]
Blackadder: I mean, look at this. What is it?
Baldrick: I'm surprised you've forgotten, my lord.
Blackadder: I haven't forgotten; it's a rhetorical question.
Baldrick: No, it's a potato.

Not bad...but a bit gross--even for Blackadder!
2 June 2010 | by MartinHaferSee all my reviews

The episode begins with everyone excited at the arrival back in England of Sir Walter Raleigh--and everyone has got 'explorer fever'. All they can talk about is Raleigh's exploits and adventures and Edmund clearly is bored and a bit jealous. Eventually, he's pressured into going on an expedition himself--and unfortunately he hires the world's biggest idiot to be the captain of the ship. Soon they learn that the idiot captain (Tom Baker) has no idea how to sail and eventually this leads to some very, very nasty urine-drinking that made my wife gag as we watched.

All in all, a decent episode but also a bit of a letdown--mostly because it's better sad when urine-drinking is among the funniest moments in the show. If you had to skip one episode, this might just be a good choice.
