Hawke and Dom must stop a suspected traitor from turning an advanced military fighter over to the Russians in exchange for his son who was born in Vietnam. The aircraft the Air Force pilots are flying is a Boeing Skyfox, a plane intended to replace the Lockheed T-33. The concept was actually a kit upgrade to an existing T-33 airframe. While several parties, including USAF, were interested, the program never really got off the ground. Only one airframe conversion was ever completed, registration number N221SF. It first flew on August 23, 1983. In the establishing shot when the plane is first seen, there is actually a T-33, the plane the Skyfox was intended to replace, parked next to it. See more
The Airwolf computer identifies the incoming fighters as MiG-23S Floggers, which is the correct designation for the aircraft. However, the MiG23S was a limited production variant. Only 60 were ever built and they were used primarily for flight and operational testing. They were never used in active front-line service. See more
