Sunday brought a close to the 10th Life Is Beautiful music festival in Las Vegas, and with it the end of the summer festival season. Life Is Beautiful, which has taken place in the city every year for the past decade (save for a pandemic-related 2020 cancellation), brought tens of thousands of concertgoers downtown, many in the psychedelic and post-Y2K fashion that’s been so common at festivals for the past several years, though this time with a fair amount of Barbie influence, too.

“Minamata,” starring Johnny Depp, Nanette Burstein’s documentary series about Hillary Clinton, “Hillary,” and Agnieszka Holland’s “Charlatan” have been selected to play in the Berlinale Special section of the Berlin Film Festival, the event said Tuesday.
Also selected in the section are two documentary features, Jóhann Jóhannsson’s “Last and First Men,” narrated by Tilda Swinton, and Jia Zhang-ke’s “Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue.”
These five titles join Matteo Garrone “Pinocchio” in Berlinale Special, whose selection was announced last month.
Depp plays celebrated photographer W. Eugene Smith in Andrew Levitas’ “Minamata,” which follows Smith as he takes on a powerful corporation responsible for poisoning the people of Minamata, Japan, in 1971.
The film is based on Aileen Mioko Smith and W. Eugene Smith’s book “Minamata,” which has been adapted by David K. Kessler (“A Hard Day’s Day”).

First-round Grammy voting is currently underway, and running through October 10th. For our 2020 Grammy preview, we asked a series of likely contenders to reflect on their past experiences at the ceremony, look ahead to the future, and break down the albums and singles that could earn them a statue come February.
“I learned how to take myself less seriously after the Grammys,” says Khalid, the young pop star from El Paso. He was just 19 when he attended his first ceremony last year, fresh off the success of his breakout debut album.

Khalid delivered a double shot of songs from his new album, Free Spirit, performing “Talk” and “Better” at the Billboard Music Awards Wednesday.
Khalid opened with “Talk,” floating through the track with impeccable ease, and even tossing in a few new vocal runs while a troupe of back-up dancers moved behind him. The singer kept the same vibes up during “Better,” adding a few more dancers and waltzing down the stage towards the crowd as he belted the song’s final hook, “Nothin’ feels better than this/Nothin’ feels better.

The new generation of up-and-coming music artists is full of notable young talents, and one at the forefront is 21-year-old contemporary R&B singer Khalid. After the release of his 2017 debut studio album American Teen, Khalid's sweet and wistful vocals began taking over the airwaves and streaming services. Since then, it feels as if the El Paso, TX, crooner has been catapulted into the spotlight, and he keeps delivering top-notch jams.
In 2018, he won a Billboard Music Award for top new artist, an American Music Award for favorite male artist, and two Teen Choice Awards for choice R&B/hip-hop song and breakout star, among other honors. Khalid embarks on a search for self-discovery and a good time in the freewheeling video for “Free Spirit,” the title track off the singer’s new record.

Khalid Robinson’s 2017 debut LP, American Teen, was a coming-of-age record that made young-dumb brokeness feel like the only way to go. At 19, Khalid had appeared on tracks by Kendrick Lamar and Future, and he was tight with Kylie Jenner. Yet he perfectly inhabited the world of an average high school kid as he tried to make sense of his messy emotions over Eighties-loving R&B tracks. The results reduced Drake-size ambition to the relatable scale of a dude who sang about living with his folks.

Khalid roams around color-coded rooms in his vivid video for “Talk,” the new single from his upcoming second LP, Free Spirit. Throughout the clip, the singer-songwriter dances in a balloon-filled space and chills on top of a car. Khalid hosts a late-night dance party for one in his laid-back “Better” video, calmly crooning in a parking lot full of zooming cars. Since breaking out with “Location” in 2016, Khalid has focused on trying to establish himself as a pop powerhouse. This makes sense, as there are more opportunities available in the pop space than in any other arena; the difficulty is that historically, only a handful of non-white performers have been allowed to compete there.
Khalid has eased his way in. He worked with the Lorde collaborator Joel Little on shiny singles like “Young Dumb & Broke;” he made living in his parents’ house cool again on the crisper-than-crisp “8Teen.” His amiable debut album,...

Drake and Cardi B have the most American Music Awards nominations tonight (eight apiece), but Camila Cabello will win the most awards. That’s according to the combined predictions of Gold Derby’s users who have entered their AMAs picks in our predictions center. Cabello is up for five prizes, and she’s the favorite to win every single one of them.
Cabello will claim New Artist of the Year, Favorite Pop/Rock Female Artist and three prizes for her hit song “Havana” featuring Young Thug: Video of the Year, Collaboration of the Year and Favorite Pop/Rock Song. This comes after the MTV Video Music Awards this past summer, where she pulled off big upsets for Video of the Year and Artist of the Year. Both the VMAs and AMAs are decided by fans voting online, so clearly our predictors think Cabello’s fan base will come out in full force yet again.

One week after the Grammys on January 28 we’re seeing the effects of the awards on the Billboard 200 albums chart. Bruno Mars, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and Khalid all saw an increase in their equivalent album units. None of those reached the top spot, though. Rap reigned supreme as another group of Grammy contenders, Migos, debuted at number-one with their new album “Culture II.”
The Billboard 200 calculates album units based on a combination of traditional sales, individual track sales, and online streams. “Culture II” launched in the top spot with 199,000 units, powered mostly by its streaming performance. In fact, with 225.6 million streams it had the biggest week of on-demand online listens for any album since Lamar’s “Damn” dropped in April 2017. Migos had two Grammy nominations last week: Best Rap Album for their previous release “Culture” and Best Rap Performance for “Bad and Boujee” with Lil Uzi Vert. They lost...

At this year’s Sundance Film Festival, the annual event broke some of its own barriers, doling out each of its four directing awards to female filmmakers. For the first time in the festival’s 34-year history, directing prizes went only to women, spanning all four major categories — narrative and documentary, U.S. and world cinema: Sara Colangelo (“The Kindergarten Teacher”), Alexandria Bombach (“On Her Shoulders”), Sandi Tan (“Shirkers”), and Isold Uggadottir (“And Breathe Normally”). The festival’s juries also awarded Desiree Akhavan’s “The Miseducation of Cameron Post” the Grand Jury Prize, the festival’s highest honor; Sundance’s sole dedicated screenplay honor, the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award, went to Christina Choe for “Nancy.”
In short, it was a big festival for women. But what does winning an award at Sundance actually mean for female filmmakers? How does it impact future projects? Does it guarantee further success in the industry?...

2017 has been quite a year for Khalid.
The 19-year-old performer kicked things off strong in January, when his breakthrough single, “Location,” hit the Billboard R&B Top 10. Two months later, the song’s remix -- featuring Lil Wayne and Kehlani -- was released, along with his debut album, American Teen. In August, he won Best New Artist at the VMAs. By November, he was a Grammy nominee.
“This year has most absolutely been one big whirlwind,” the artist, born Khalid Donnel Robinson, recently told Et. “I try to take all of my experiences in and not take anything for granted. It’s really hard for me to pick and choose highlights because everything has been so incredible!”
It may be tough for him to pick a standout moment from a year that looks more like a best-of reel, but one highlight has to be the singer calling his own shot when it comes to the GRAMMYs. On the morning...

The nominees are in for the 60th Annual Grammy Awards, and music's biggest night will feature some of your favorite artists ...though some were snubbed.
Singer-songwriter Andra Day announced the four major categories -- Best New Artist, Record Of The Year, Song Of The Year, and Album Of The Year -- on Tuesday's CBS This Morning.
As far as snubs go, Ed Sheeran was only nominated for Best Pop Solo Performance for his track, "Shape of You," to the shock of many of his fans. Lady Gaga and Kesha also received minimal nominations, despite the popularity of their albums.
However, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar earned quite a few Grammy nods, as well as Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee's "Despacito" song that features Justin Bieber.

There’s an in between zone that parents often look for if they’re easing their kids into horror. If they’re fans of the genre themselves, the urge to take the tykes from Scooby-Doo to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is very tempting. I was one of the fortunate ones who was allowed to cut out the middleman and dive right into the heady stuff. So it was then that I missed out on a great bridge between the two extremes, The Midnight Hour (1985), ABC’s successful bid to get the Thriller-crazy crowd on their side.

Netflix's adaptation of the Japanese manga Death Note marks the latest incarnation of this well-established property, which has seen numerous previous movie, TV and anime treatments in Japan and overseas, but no prior live-action English-language version. With the streamer's global reach, the latest iteration will easily attract a worldwide audience in conjunction with a limited U.S. theatrical run, but building an eventual franchise on the back of director Adam Wingard's latest feature may prove more challenging across such a wide variety of territories and cultures.

Long before Dominic Toretto and his crew became globe-trotting superheroes, they might have been the neighbors of the Alvarez family, known as “low-riders” who restore gorgeous American muscle cars, including the star of their garage: father Miguel’s gorgeous 69’ Chevy Impala named Green Poison. Not unlike the Fast & Furious saga, family is at the center of Lowriders, a drama of surprisingly grounded insight from director Ricardo de Montreuil.
The story follows the coming of age of Danny (Gabriel Chavarria), a young Mexican-American teen who’d rather paint street art than murals on his father Miguel’s (Demián Bichir) lowriders. Miguel and his sons rarely see eye to eye, and complicating matters is the return of brother Francisco, aka Ghost (Theo Rossi), fresh out of jail for grand theft auto. Competing in his father’s footsteps, he steals cars to build his own dream Impala.

For fans of 80s action cinema, No Retreat No Surrender holds a special place. We've been speaking to the man behind the series...
If you were a kid in the 1980s and you liked action movies, chances are you rented No Retreat No Surrender at some point. It was like a more violent, high-octane take on The Karate Kid, with all-American teen Jason (Kurt McKinney) getting martial arts tutelage from no less than The Ghost Of Bruce Lee so he could kick the ass of a muscly Russian (Jean-Claude Van Damme in his first major role). As a kid, this movie was everything to me. It was a 15 cert so a little bit edgy, but still simple and wholesome enough for young me to totally ‘get it’. I had tears streaming down my face the first time I watched it, I was so invested in the final fight.

Many weird-world genre bending millennial epics have already dated badly, but not Richard Kelly’s sci-fi / horror / satirical mind-trip about a guy given a glimpse of time travel in another dimension. The wit hasn’t faded and the menace hasn’t cooled, and the cast seems hipper than ever: Jake Gyllenhaal, Jena Malone, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mary McDonnell, Patrick Swayze, Noah Wyle, Drew Barrymore, Katharine Ross. Two versions, two formats, no waiting.

When The Fast and the Furious was released in June 2001, the signs did not portend its eventual future as one of cinema’s most durable and lucrative franchises. The original film, based on a magazine article about street racing, didn’t feature any A-list stars and wasn’t expected to make a dent in a summer featuring “surefire” box-office hits like Pearl Harbor, Tomb Raider and Planet of the Apes.

Knowing that the much anticipated series premiere of Riverdale is mere hours away from hitting airwaves, it comes an no surprise that yet another full clip has hit the web. Interestingly enough, it’s slightly different from the darker, moodier tone given by most promo material offered to date.
In it, we’re granted a bit of levity that shows the spirit of classic Archie comic books remains in this series. As Betty Cooper and Kevin Keller discuss the former’s upcoming date with Archie Andrews, speak of the devil, the ginger-haired young man is changing his clothes in the window directly next door, as if on cue. Being highly reminiscent of scenes from films such as Scream and American Beauty, one has to wonder how someone wouldn’t notice others peeping a stone’s throw away.

What leaps to mind whenever someone mentions Archie comics? Teenagers crammed into a jalopy, driving to the soda shop? A romantic rivalry between girl-next-door Betty and spoiled rich kid Veronica? Bubblegum pop hits like "Sugar, Sugar?" Jughead's stupid hat?

Sundance deals accrue such legend that it’s easy to forget the ones that materialize out of nowhere. Such was the case 20 years ago to this day, when Miguel Arteta’s first feature “Star Maps” premiered at the festival and landed a $2.5 million deal with Fox Searchlight.
The movie, which tells the story of a Latin American teen (Douglas Spain) who works as a bisexual hustler while harboring dreams of movie stardom, became an overnight sensation at Sundance — and also turned Arteta into a permanent member of the festival family. Since then he’s returned with “Chuck & Buck” (2000) and with “The Good Girl” (2002); tonight he screens his latest effort, “Beatriz at Dinner” out of competition.
The “Star Maps” deal also marked a historic moment for this site. At roughly a year old, IndieWire was establishing itself as a nimble digital upstart that had accrued popularity at Sundance, where it published a daily print edition.

A look-back at the previous attempts to bring Archie to TV before they got it right with Riverdale...
When Riverdale premieres on the CW on January 26th, it will mark a milestone for Archie Comics - the first time in the company's 75-year history that its characters will truly shine on television. A mix of gleefully ridiculous kitsch with standout performances and some truly smart writing, the series is poised to be 2017's breakout TV hit.
See related Shane Black: a career retrospective Zack Snyder interview: Batman V Superman
That said, it took a while for Archie to get to this point. There have been many attempts to bring Archie and his friends to TV before, but these all suffered for either being shoddily animated (the various 1960s cartoons), misguided (1990's Archie: To Riverdale and Back Again), or just plain, um, weird (the X-Files cash-in Archie's Weird Mysteries...

Film historian B. Ruby Rich credits the 1992 Sundance Film Festival as the cradle of New Queer Cinema, and a quick survey of this year’s festival lineup confirms that Lgbt films stand an excellent chance of attracting audiences. Lesbian filmmaker Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” is one of the most talked about films of the year, trans director Yance Ford’s deeply personal “Strong Island” has been years in the making, and we may have the British “Brokeback Mountain” (but better) with Francis Lee’s “God’s Own Country.”

With trailers dropping left and right, as well as spinoff chatter already occurring, Riverdale is easily one of the most anticipated new shows to premiere at the midseason mark. And considering that Archie Comics are currently enjoying a creative renaissance, it couldn’t have come at a more opportune time.
The latest round of promotional material comes in the form of six new character photos featuring the likes of Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge, Cheryl Blossom, Jughead Jones, and Josie McCoy. Capturing the moody and dramatic tone of the series, the images somehow manage to be dark and vibrant at the same time, so kudos go to The CW and their photographers for pulling off such a feat.

Supposedly ‘inspirational’ films tend to leave our critic reaching for the sick bag. He finds defeated boxers, desperate weathermen and boozy, cantankerous widowers far more uplifting
More uplifting culture for 2017
Can films be inspirational? Well, the good ones all are. And, in a broader sense, going to the cinema is a narcotic, luxurious experience that makes you feel inspired, uplifted and stimulated. But when people talk about “inspirational” films – underdogs achieving spectacular sporting success, charismatic teachers winning over pupils, people overcoming disabilities – I am sometimes a bit agnostic. An inspirational film often feels soupy and syrupy, schematic and cliched, faintly coercive and reactionary. Inspirational means aspirational, no arguments – and it brings out my ironic, grumpy Brit. When I’m asked for my favourite inspirational scene, I nominate Tom Courtenay’s final, miserable act of defiance in The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner.

George Sidney’s 1963 musical satire takes on all comers, including Elvis Presley, television and the rise of the American Teenager but the film is most memorable for the super-charged performance of the redheaded bump-and-grinder who personified that All-American teen, Ann-Margret. On a less combustible note, Dick Van Dyke’s affable everyman persona is always welcome and a hilariously nerve-wracked Paul Lynde confronts the Generation Gap with his own special brand of fear and loathing.

Although it certainly took a while for us to get a substantial trailer for The CW’s next major comic book adaptation to hit airwaves, Riverdale, we’re slowly but surely being granted more looks into this reimagined world now that the floodgates have been opened, so to speak.
If anything, this perpetuates the painting of a darker picture, one that has already made fans of classic Archie Comics a bit skeptical. We can’t help but to say their concerns have some validity, but on the other hand, this sure does look like some compelling television. And, to be quite honest, any show that has the cult hit Supernatural serving as its lead-in is going to require an edge.
This recently circulated promo, however, shows that the optimism the source material is known for will still likely be present despite the footage provided dripping with love triangle drama. But then again,...
