    Elaborate Nativity Scene
For an evangelical depiction of poverty, "The Foundling," or "Two Little Jesus'," is a mostly well-composed short silent film. There's fine continuity across scenes, tinting for lighting changes, silhouetted figures, and a cut to a closer view for the nativity-scene switcheroo. The narration is in the tableau style of the day, but there are few title cards to make that overly distracting. Moreover, I wonder whether real, non-acting people were secretly filmed for the bridge scene, where the mother carries what one assumes is a child while she evidently contemplates suicide and murder. Some of the people on the bridge look genuinely concerned, for a moment that is, before they continue on with their day. The narrative is appreciably simple, too, concerning a mother abandoned by her child's father, wandering the streets begging until she surrenders her offspring to a convent of nuns. The mom gets overly histrionic by the end, but it's easy to give the picture a pass considering how well made and emotionally powerful it is for 1910.

I saw the film from the Edition Filmmuseum two-disc set "Screening the Poor," where it's included under the section for "Escape" from poverty--even though this isn't entirely the case for all of the characters in this one.
