Watch Now: First two minutes of ‘Batman Ninja’

The visually stunning Batman Ninja is the creative result of a trio of anime’s finest filmmakers – director Jumpei Mizusaki (Opening Animation of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), writer Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann), and character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) produced the original movie with Warner Bros. Japan. The script was then reinterpreted and rewritten for English-language distribution by award-winning screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia.

Batman Ninja takes a journey across the ages as Gorilla Grodd’s time displacement machine transports many of Batman’s worst enemies to feudal Japan – along with the Dark Knight and a few of his allies. The villains take over the forms of the feudal lords that rule the divided land, with the Joker taking the lead among the warring factions. As his traditional high-tech weaponry is exhausted almost immediately, Batman must rely on his intellect and his allies – including Catwoman and the extended Bat-family

This Batman Ninja Trailer Is Weird And Amazing In All The Right Ways

I’ve long had a soft spot for stories that transplant Batman to different times. The best is probably Gotham By Gaslight, which imagines a Victorian Batman tangling with Jack the Ripper, but I also have a huge soft spot for Grant Morrison’s time-hopping miniseries Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, in which we see Caveman Batman, Witchhunter Batman, Pirate Batman, Cowboy Batman and 30s Gumshoe Batman. So, I’m naturally over the moon with this new trailer for Batman Ninja.

First announced at the New York Comic-Con, the project is the brainchild of DC and a number of anime and manga superstars. Namely, Junpei Mizusaki (Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure), Takashi Okazashi (Afro Samurai), and Kazuki Nakashima (Gurren Lagann).

From what I can tell from the trailer, the movie opens with Batman and the Joker engaged in a typically tense battle to the death, only to find themselves hurled back to medieval Japan.

Astounding First Trailer For The DC Anime Batman Ninja!

While the geek world continues to argue amongst themselves about Justice League, DC quietly just dropped a trailer for what looks to be their most exciting animated feature to date. Batman Ninja, which is a rare anime-style feature from the company, shows Bruce Wayne thrust from modern times into Medieval Japan where some friends are already waiting for him. I'm not exactly sure why Batman is the last to arrive (especially considering every past Robin and Red Hood is there), but I was all in the moment when I saw Edo Joker in action!

The film was developed by screenwriter Kazuki Nakashima (Kill La Kill), director Jumpei Mizusaki (JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure), character designer Takashi Okazaki (Afro Samurai) and the English-language screenwriters Leo Chu and Eric Garcia (Supa Ninjas).

Check out the first trailer, complete with subtitles, and tell me this isn't something you're interested in seeing in 2018.
