Sex & Nudity

  • The girl is walking around the hospital at night; panting and moaning are heard coming from behind a door. Nothing is shown.

Violence & Gore

  • Characters are shot, resulting in some blood spray
  • The girl views through a window a mother above her dying child being told by a doctor that her child will not survive from the bites of snake pits. Doctor leaves and mother is alone with unconscious child. Screams desperately at child to "wake up or they will chop you up"- embraces child showing notable vomit from a near lifeless young face.
  • a man is stabbed by a sword right through the heart; blood gushes from the wound, and there is a very graphic sound as the sword goes through him and sticks out the front of his body.
  • A monkey is shot. Close-up of monkey and bullet wound visible. Little blood, but visible entry wound
  • Many characters deaths are depicted as them "giving up"- a concept that the child asks "why did they kill themselves? Why are we running away?" The question isn't answered, nor is any consolation given towards the child.

Profanity

  • G**Damn is used twice. Mild otherwise.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A paralyzed man talks a 5-year-old girl into stealing morphine from the depository for him. At another time, he convinces her to break into a fellow patient's cabinet to steal the medication that is in there. Later, he swallows handfuls of pills in front of her in an attempt to kill himself. Later, regrets taking the pills, as the little girl convinces him that he should live. The overall theme of the movie is anti-suicide.
  • A man drinks what looks to be a bottle of whisky as he tells the end of the story to a young girl
  • Both drugs and alcohol use are depicted; drug use is much more directly spoken against than drinking.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • There are some ugly and scary looking creatures but they don't have that much screen time. Older kids should be able to handle it.
  • Girl hides behind window as mother mourns child's death / tries to awake child from death. Child is seen eyes closed, skin pale green, vomit from mouth.
  • In a brief scene, birds fly out of a dying man's mouth.
  • Several of the characters of the story die in the end, as the little girl sobs and begs they don't die.
  • Very surreal and somewhat graphic stop-motion animation dream-like sequence where it is implied that a little girl is having surgery on her brain by getting her skull cut open.
