‘I Am the Night’: Patty Jenkins’ Miniseries to Have Its World Premiere at AFI Fest

AFI Fest has added another world premiere to its slate: “I Am the Night,” the upcoming limited series from “Wonder Woman” director Patty Jenkins. Following the true-life story of a woman named Fauna Hodel who was given away at birth and began looking into her own past as a teenager, it joins Chuck Lorre’s “The Kominsky Method” as the Hollywood festival’s only TV programming. Chris Pine and India Eisley star in the limited series from TNT.

AFI Fest has also announced its Special Screenings, Cinema’s Legacy, and Midnight lineups; among the most buzzed-about selections are Alfonso Cuarón’s “Roma,” Yorgos Lanthimos’ “The Favourite,” “Brady Corbet’s “Vox Lux,” David Robert Mitchell’s “Under the Silver Lake,” and Paweł Pawlikowski’s “Cold War.”

Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the rest of the DC stable of superheroes are some of the most recognizable characters in popular culture. Aquaman: 12 Theories Confirmed To Be True (And 8 We Hope Aren’t)

After everything the DC Extended Universe has been through in the last few years, it’s fair to say that great expectations for Aquaman were not exactly coming up to the surface. With the release of the latest trailer, a tsunami of enthusiasm has bubbled up. Not only do the undersea effects look absolutely awesome, but getting to see old Arthur Curry in action, facing off against classic villains while allying himself with familiar faces, has turned fan hopes from a minnow to a whale.

It’s a refreshing splash after being offered sub-par fare like Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League. On the other hand, Wonder Woman definitely upped the game for DC’s efforts, so maybe we shouldn’t be that surprised. The tide of details has been trickling out into the media, and there are a whole lot of awesome reveals that have breached above water.

Flash Standalone Movie Pushes Start Date, Eyes 2021 Release (Exclusive)

Comic book fans will have to wait a little bit longer to see the Flash race into theaters, and Albus Dumbledore may be partly to blame for the delay.

Warner Bros. is pushing back the start of filming on the studio’s still untitled standalone Flash film, sources tell Variety. The film never received a formal greenlight nor did it have a set release date, but it had been expected to begin shooting in March. However, a script is still being tweaked and the studio thinks that it won’t have enough time to get the script in shape in order for the film to make its original start date.

That’s a problem, because Ezra Miller, the live-wire performer tasked with playing the Flash, also has a key supporting role in “Fantastic Beasts,” the “Harry Potter” spin-off series. The third film in the franchise begins shooting in July, which would cause scheduling headaches.

‘Pennyworth’: Jack Bannon To Star In Title Alfred Role On Epix’s Batman Prequel

Epix and Warner Bros. TV have found their Alfred Pennyworth. Jack Bannon has been cast in the title role of the upcoming Epix drama series Pennyworth, a Batman prequel from Gotham showrunner Bruno Heller, executive producer/director Danny Cannon and Warner Horizon Scripted TV.

The 10-episode Pennyworth will begin production October 22 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK, becoming the first series to film in the Warner Bros.-owned studio complex north of London which has housed production for such movies as WB’s Harry Potter/Fantastic Beasts franchise, The Dark Knight, Inception and Wonder Woman as well as outside productions such as Jason Bourne, Kingsman, Paddington and the most recent Mission Impossible installments.

‘Venom’ Courses To $378M Ww; ‘Star Is Born’ Tops $135M; ‘First Man’ Begins Offshore Journey – International Box Office

Update, writethru: Sony’s Venom kept its fangs sharp in this sophomore session, topping the worldwide charts again with $105.4M, including $69.7M at the international box office. The Tom Hardy-starrer has lifted its global cume to $378.1M after 12 days with overseas contributing $235.3M. Venom, based on the Marvel property, was No. 1 in 54 markets this frame including a handful of new hubs and was down 47% versus last weekend in the holdovers. It’s tracking 32% above Ant-Man And The Wasp and 12% over Doctor Strange for the same group of markets and at the same point in release.

Singing along, Warner BrosA Star Is Born saw a drop of just 14% since it took the stage last weekend. The $20.2M frame in 65 markets lifts the offshore cume to a running $41.2M. Italy (where the Bradley Cooper/Lady Gaga-starrer world premiered during the Venice Film Festival) was the top opener, followed by Brazil and Mexico.

‘Venom’ Grabs $69 Million From International Markets
Tom Hardy’s “Venom” remained a potent player internationally in its second weekend, grabbing $69.7 million with first-place finishes in 54 markets at 20,100 screens.

Sony’s superhero saga has now taken in $235.3 million in a dozen days from overseas markets and is tracking 32% ahead of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and 12% ahead of “Doctor Strange” for the same group of markets at the same point in release. It’s also won the domestic box office twice for a worldwide total of $378.1 million.

France was the top market for “Venom” as it launched in first with $6.7 million (including previews), topping the openings of “Ant-Man and the Wasp” and “Wonder Woman.” Vietnam also generated a first-place opening with $3 million for “Venom,” as did Thailand with $2.2 million.

Russia led the way among holdover markets with $5.5 million, followed by Brazil with $4.7 million, Mexico with $4.5 million, South Korea with $4.4 million, Australia with $2.8 million, and Germany with $2.6 million. “Venom

Kristen Wiig's Barbara Minerva fights off an attacker in latest Wonder Woman 1984 set pictures. The Wonder Woman sequel is deep into production, but we haven't seen a whole lot of Kristen Wiig on the set, and we have yet to see her as Cheetah. However, we have seen a tease of her Cheetah powers in a leaked set video from over the summer, which shows the character making a crazy leap into the air, using harnesses.

The new Wonder Woman 1984 set photos feature Kristen Wiig's Barbara Minerva in what appears to be the same outfit from the picture that director Patty Jenkins first shared at the end of June. However, instead of checking out items in a museum, Minerva is being attacked by an unknown assailant. Taking that into account, it's safe to assume that she has not yet acquired her powers, or is just not aware of them yet.

Some new pics from the set of Wonder Woman 1984 give us an early glimpse of Princess Diana of Themyscira’s next foe engaged in a heated battle, though it’s not quite the epic showdown you might expect.

Once more, Kristen Wiig’s character has been spotted in Barbara Ann Minerva’s more mundane form. But while these images look to have been taken from an early point in the villain’s arc – before she’s made the full transformation into Cheetah – it’s apparent that her life already has a little conflict in it, as she looks to be frantically fighting off a man who’s trying to grab her.

It’s not exactly a comic book movie clash for the ages, but for now, we’ll take it.

Mark Millar Praises New Aquaman Trailer And Bashes The McU

The new five-minute trailer for Aquaman may have earned the Dceu a convert in comic book writer Mark Millar.

The scribe known for his work on Kick-Ass and Civil War hasn’t been the biggest fan of DC’s cinematic output in the past. Earlier this year, for instance, Millar argued that superheroes like Superman and Wonder Woman don’t translate well to the big screen, since these characters are more defined by their powers than their personalities. But based on this recent tweet from the writer, the latest footage from Arthur Curry’s first standalone film may have him rethinking his stance:

As excited as I am for Aquaman and as awesome as it looks, this is a ridiculous statement. Yes, the visuals are stunning! But, we still have yet to see if the script and story are actually good. You can have the craziest awesome visuals ever, but it’s all a waste if the story is crap.

Rooster Teeth Partners With DC For ‘Rwby’, ‘gen:lock’ Comic Books

Following its $85 billion takeover of Time Warner -- which has since been renamed WarnerMedia -- telecommunications giant At&T is finding new synergy between new and existing brands.

WarnerMedia-owned comic book publisher DC Entertainment, which is behind iconic franchises like Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman, has pacted with Austin-based Rooster Teeth to create comic books inspired by two of the digital network’s flagship series. Comic book and graphic novel adaptations of Rwby and gen:lock will arrive in 2019. More comics could arrive in the future, Rooster Teeth Animation head Gray G. Haddock announced over the weekend at New York Comic-Con.

The ensuing comics will seek to expand the worlds around popular characters, bridge stories between seasons, and explore the adventures of supporting characters who play a direct role in the overall plot, said DC chief creative officer and publisher Jim Lee.

Bo Report: ‘Venom’ defies the critics while ‘Ladies in Black’ stays strong

The critics hated Venom, blasted by Rolling Stone’s Pete Travers as a “puddle of simplistic, sanitized PG-13 drivel” and the worst Marvel film of the year, and by The Guardian’s Peter Bradshaw as clumsy, monolithic and fantastically boring.

Audiences must be watching a different movie as the Sony Pictures/Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man spin-off starring Tom Hardy, Michelle Williams and Riz Ahmed smashed October opening weekend records worldwide last weekend.

Bruce Beresford’s Ladies in Black clearly is benefiting from repeat business in its third weekend while Benjamin Gilmour’s Jirga advanced to $128,000 including festival screenings after taking $16,000 in its second weekend on 10 screens.

Paramount released Paw Patrol: Mighty Pups direct to home entertainment in the Us but gave it a theatrical run here as an alternate content release.

‘Venom’ Sinks Teeth Into $205M Global Bow; Sets Biggest October Debut Ww & Overseas – International Box Office

Update, writethru: Sony’s Venom, based on the Marvel property, has sunk its teeth into a coursing $205.2M globally with the biggest opening in October history worldwide, domestically and overseas. The international box office portion of Venom’s bite was $125.2M, coming in ahead of industry projections that had it around $110M. The Tom Hardy-starrer bowed in 58 offshore markets and was tops in 57. Overall, and in like-for-likes at today’s rates, Venom bested the openings of Doctor Strange (+20%), Ant-Man And The Wasp (+32%) and Wonder Woman (+38%).

The five-day $16.4M bow of Venom in Korea, a discerning hero market, has already surpassed the lifetimes of Captain America: The First Avenger, Justice League, Suicide Squad and Wonder Woman.
