Warner Bros. Not Developing ‘Superman’ Movies With Henry Cavill As Priority Shifts To ‘Supergirl’

Warner Bros. Not Developing ‘Superman’ Movies With Henry Cavill As Priority Shifts To ‘Supergirl’
This has been in the wind for some time, but Henry Cavill will not be reprising his role as Superman in Warner Bros.DC films as others from Justice League such as Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman) and Jason Momoa move forward on their respective superhero features.

The word has been out that Warner Bros. has been mulling going in a completely different direction with its Superman canon, even considering casting Michael B. Jordan in the role down the road. But at the present moment a Supergirl movie is the studio’s priority as Deadline exclusively broke back in August. Oren Uziel is working on the Supergirl script. According to DC mythology, the character was a teen when she escaped the doomed planet Krypton along with the infant who grew up as Clark Kent.

Cavill we have confirmed could not make a cameo in New Line’s Shazam! due to scheduling conflicts on Mission: Impossible – Fallout.

Henry Cavill Out as Superman Amid Warner Bros.' DC Universe Shake-Up (Exclusive)

Henry Cavill Out as Superman Amid Warner Bros.' DC Universe Shake-Up (Exclusive)
The DC cinematic universe appears to be losing its Man of Steel.

Henry Cavill, who has played Superman in three films, is parting ways with Warner Bros., sources tell The Hollywood Reporter. Though neither side is confirming, the British actor, who first donned the blue suit for 2013's Man of Steel, and then starred in 2016's Batman v. Superman and last year's Justice League, is said to be hanging up the red cape.

Warners had been trying to enlist Cavill, who most recently co-starred in Mission: Impossible — Fallout, for a Superman cameo in Shazam!, which stars Zachary Levi and will bow April 5. But contract talks between Cavill's WME reps and Warners broke down, and the door is now closing on other potential Superman appearances.

That's because the studio has shifted its focus to a Supergirl movie, which will be an origin story featuring a teen superheroine. This effectively removes an actor of Cavill's age from the storyline's equation given that Superman, aka Kal-El, would be an infant, according to DC lore.

Furthermore, Warners isn't likely to make a solo Superman film for at least several years, according to another source. "Superman is like James Bond, and after a certain run you have to look at new actors," says a studio source. As such, Cavill will join Ben Affleck, who isn't expected to reprise his role for director Matt Reeves' forthcoming Batman stand-alone film, as a hero on the way out.

A Warners source says the Shazam! deal fell apart because of scheduling conflicts. And that is backed up by the fact that Cavill recently signed on to star in the Netflix series The Witcher. However, another source says that the Witcher commitment came after the Warners impasse, suggesting a change in Warners' strategy.

"There's a recognition that some parts of the previous movies didn't work," says the studio insider. Another source says Warners is trying to hit a "reset" button with the DC universe, steering its ship slowly into another direction.

While Affleck and Cavill are segueing out, others who were seen together onscreen in Justice League are carrying forward. Gal Gadot is returning for Wonder Woman 1984, to hit theaters in November 2019. Jason Momoa headlines a solo Aquaman movie this December. And Ezra Miller remains on board to star in a Flash movie, which is due to shoot in early 2019.

Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara and chairman of Warner Bros. Pictures Group Toby Emmerich are looking to reinvigorate the studio's DC Universe, which is still playing second fiddle to the Marvel Universe in terms of box office and critical acclaim. Just six years ago, when The Dark Knight Rises closed out the Christopher Nolan trilogy, DC was the superhero team with the mojo. But so far, only Patty JenkinsWonder Woman spinoff has lived up to the promise of the franchise.

What Warners hasn't done is wiped the slate clean in one fell swoop, something that is nigh impossible to do given the years of planning that goes into these films. When asked about the studio Sept. 6 at an investor conference, new WarnerMedia CEO John Stankey said, "Hats off to Kevin and Toby and their team." But he also took a shot at DC. "Some of our franchises, in particular at DC, we all think we can do better."

Margot Robbie Confirms ‘Birds Of Prey’ Production To Begin In January
As far as the current slate of DCEU films, we only have a few confirmed titles and release dates. We still don’t know a hell of a lot about “Birds of Prey,” other than the fact that Margot Robbie will bring her Harley Quinn character from “Suicide Squad” and that the film will be directed by Cathy Yan.

Matt Reeves says things are going "really, really well" on The Batman

  • JoBlo
After the poor performance of Justice League, everything went a bit dark in regards to the future of the DCEU.

The only projects we know are confirmed are the ones coming out in the next year and a half, including Shazam!, Aquaman and Wonder Woman 2. Even news on Matt Reeves' The Batman has been almost non-existent recently. But we can rejoice now because Reeves took to Twitter to give a very small update on...

Mark Strong Confirms ‘I’m Playing an Evil Bastard Called Doctor Sivana’ in ‘Shazam’
On Sunday, Mark Strong confirmed TheWrap’s reporting the he is playing the villain in “Shazam,” telling Contactmusic that “I’m playing an evil bastard called Doctor Sivana, they are always the best characters to play, the most fun.” Sivana will be Strong’s second time playing a DC Comics villain. The first was Sinestro in 2011’s “Green Lantern,” a film Strong told Contactmusic he thought was “rather good.” However, the film’s disappointing box office led to the cancelation of planned sequels which would have featured Sinestro in a much larger role, “so I feel like I’ve got unfinished business in the DC world.” Strong added. Zachary Levi: ‘Shazam!’ Is ‘Superman’ Meets ‘Big’; Teases Possible Wonder Woman Cameo

Zachary Levi: ‘Shazam!’ Is ‘Superman’ Meets ‘Big’; Teases Possible Wonder Woman Cameo
DC Comics' Shazam! (a.k.a. Captain Marvel) isn't exactly a straightforward superhero when compared to his Justice League counterparts. Superman's an alien from a dead planet, Batman's a tormented billionaire, and Wonder Woman's an Amazonian warrior princess; "Shazam" is an acronym/code word/name of a mysterious wizard that harnesses the power of six immortal elders in order to transform young, homeless Billy Batson into the costumed superhero, Captain Marvel. It's a little unwieldy, but what makes the character fun and interesting is that he's essentially a superhero that encompasses the innocence and …

Speaking to Film Riot (via Heroic Hollywood), Sandberg has provided an update on Shazam!, confirming that the script is ready and it will be the next DC movie to go into production after Aquaman.

“There’s a script, it’s the next DC movie to shoot,” said Sandberg, who also confirmed that Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam will no longer feature in the film. “There’ve been variations of the script, like before I came along, where… you know, variations where Black Adam was in and out and, you know. But now, this is about Shazam.”

Sandberg also talked about which comic books he’s been reading in preparation for the project: “I’m taking it all in. Some of those really old ones are quite fun,

The Flash, Season 1, Episode 4, “Going Rogue”

Taking into account a DVR playback The Flash series pilot has risen to 6.8 million viewers and counting since it first premiered. That’s The CW’s most-watched telecast in the network’s history. If you count all platforms, the tally rises to 13 million viewers. If anything, “Going Rogue” will only help boost these numbers. With a script that never forgets its heroes’ humanity, and an episode that features two superpowered set pieces, “Going Rogue” lives up to its hype — and raises the bar for the DC canon. Will 'Fast and Furious 7's' James Wan direct Dwayne Johnson in ‘Shazam’?

Will 'Fast and Furious 7's' James Wan direct Dwayne Johnson in ‘Shazam’?
(Cbr) We’ve known with certainty since early last month that Dwayne Johnson will star as Black Adam in "Shazam!," which Warner Bros. revealed just last week will arrive in 2019, sandwiched between "Aquaman" and a "Justice League" sequel. Beyond that, details are pretty slim. But is it possible we’ve been given our first clue as to the director? On Tuesday, New Line Cinema announced James Wan will return to direct "The Conjuring 2" as part of an overall producing deal at the Warner Bros. subsidiary. That’s good news for fans of the director and of horror films, but MovieWeb zeroed in one this comment from New Line President Toby Emmerich: James will make an important movie for New Line and Warner Bros or DC, and that is definitely part of the plan, and a reason for bringing him into the family. He’s the only overall director with a deal here,

James Wan returning to direct The Conjuring 2, eyed for DC movie

Yesterday it was reported that horror sequel The Conjuring 2 has been pushed back to 2016, and now it seems we know the reason why, as Deadline is reporting that James Wan will return to direct once he’s finished work on the upcoming Fast & Furious 7. Meanwhile, New Line executive Toby Emmerich has also revealed that Warner Bros. has further plans for Wan, with the filmmaker being eyed for a DC movie…

“James will make an important movie for New Line and Warner Bros or DC, and that is definitely part of the plan, and a reason for bringing him into the family,” states Emmerich. “He’s the only overall director with a deal here, because we see him as a class of one.”

Universal Pictures does have an option on Wan for another Fast & Furious movie, which would presumably follow The Conjuring 2, if and when the seventh instalment proves to be a monster hit.

James Wan directing The Conjuring 2, possibly DC movie too

James Wan moves from Fast & Furious 7 to The Conjuring 2 - but might he be directing Shazam for DC, too?

Yesterday, we reported that The Conjuring 2 had been put back from October 2015 to an unspecified date in 2016. Our report on that is right here.

It seems we might just have a possible reason why, too. It's been revealed overnight that James Wan is returning to direct The Conjuring sequel, having once suggested that he was pretty much done with horror movies. However, having made the first such a sizeable hit, New Line appears to have lured him back.

Wan has been wrapping up Fast & Furious 7 for Universal, and if that goes well, you'd assume that the studio would want him on board for the inevitable Fast & Furious 8 as well (the studio certainly has an option in place on him for that film). But he might just have another major project to juggle,
