Melike and Mustafa grow up in a small village of Ürgüp, Nevsehir- the central part of Turkey. She dreams of marrying him, until he and his friend Kadir decide to leave their home country to work in Germany. After two years, the young woman has to marry the much older Yasar, although she does not love him. For financial reasons, Melike also emigrates to the "golden West" and starts working in a factory. For some the effects of the encounter of traditional (not to say archaic) values of Anatolia with modern western worlds every day life in a German city (mainly Cologne) turns out to be more of a start to new horizons, for others a tragedy.
This movie is very touching with its sensibility and patience to let the story unfold, gaining its credibility by avoiding cliché-like sentimental solutions.
Lale Yavas (Melike) and Erhan Emre (Mustafa) give a great acting performance and their chemistry is that strong that you really feel that they were made for each other. No wonder the film was widely praised and won the "Adolf Grimme Price" in 2005.
I watch a lot of movies and i have to tell you that this one is a real pearl that justifies my highest recommendations. Berlin 2009 Greetings.. Thomas
