Recycle is a portrait of a day in the life of Miguel Diaz in the hilly Los Angeles neighborhood of Echo Park. The homeless poet is recovering from substance abuse through his philosophy of recycling life. Diaz uses all the thrown away items he collects to make a community garden in the median of his street, while offering his insights on survival and nature. Written by Lusitan Films
I saw this short film on the DVD entitled "Sixth Media That Matters Film Festival". It's a very interesting and very brief character study on Manuel Diaz--a recovering addict who's been on the streets for four years. However, instead of seeking handouts, he works his butt off collection bottles for recycling money as well as growing a garden on what appears to be a median strip in Los Angeles. Here he grows crops to feed himself and make the world a prettier place. Manuel speaks in Spanish and it's captioned in English. However, his singing isn't captioned and it's a shame. I understood some of his singing but would like to have had all of it captioned.
By the way, I pretty much assume that after the film was made, some local official saw this and decided to shut down Miguel's little farm. Hopefully it's not the case and I wish him the best since he seems to be trying very hard to make it.
