MPAA Rated PG-13 for some sexuality and violence

Sex & Nudity

  • A brief discussion that included sexual talk, not crude though.
  • a young boy and girl kiss.
  • Eisenheim and Sophie kiss and then begin to undress each other. We see them caressing each other and passionately kissing. The sex is mostly implied. It cuts to a scene where they are both implied to be naked. No nudity is shown.

Violence & Gore

  • A young boy is handled roughly but is not injured.
  • A man slaps a woman in anger.
  • Blood can be seen on the side of a horse.


  • Some mild name calling.
  • "Wh*re" is used toward a woman.
  • The word D*mn is used infrequently.

Alcohol, Drugs & Smoking

  • A nobleman is seen smoking in a scene.
  • There are a few scenes of social drinking and smoking.
  • One man is shown drunk in a couple scenes.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • A woman is shown injured and unresponsive in a river. This may be intense for some.
  • There is nothing extremely intense or frightening in this film, although there are moments that could be difficult for children or some people.
  • There are two or three chase scenes which can be slightly intense.

  • Sophie's body is found in a river. There is a wound in her throat with blood around it. She is later presumed dead and her body is examined.
  • The Crown Prince Leopold shoots himself in the head. Blood can be seen by the exit wound.

Frightening & Intense Scenes

  • Apparitions of ghosts, which are part of a magic act, are shown but nothing else is really scary.
