- A romantic comedy about our amazing capacity to rebound and fall in love at any age.
- A romantic comedy about our amazing capacity to rebound and fall in love at any age. Lois, Harry, Marilyn ,Sandy and Jack live in an "Active Adult" community in Boynton Beach, Florida. Their lives intersect when they meet at a local Bereavement Club where they go to find emotional support after the loss of a loved one. For anyone who thinks that new love and romance ends long before retirement, they're in for a reality check. No one sees themselves as becoming old, and the residents of Boynton Beach aren't about to start. But sometimes we all need a little reminder that life is worth living and sharing.—Anonymous
- As each couple or bereaved spouse is introduced, the audience is shown a black and white photo of one or both from many years ago.
In Boynton Beach, Florida, where most people are retirement age, Marilyn and Marty spend their last morning together but don't realize it. Marty goes out for a walk but he is actually dancing, apparently listening to "Papa Loves Mambo", one of the few fun songs by Perry Como. A woman living nearby is backing out of her driveway while talking on a cell phone. She hits what she believes to be a recycling container but is horrified to see a man.
There is a funeral. Afterward at the airport, Marilyn picks up daughter Denise, Denise's husband and their kids Danny and Eric. The family has brought Marilyn a small dog because she needs the company. While the family is still there, Lois comes for a visit. She is an interior designer who still looks good (for her age, anyway) and has a nice figure despite being an age she won't admit to. Lois invites Marilyn to a bereavement group.
Another funeral is taking place in a cemetery, this one a Jewish ceremony. Molly, who has long black hair and wears too much black makeup and looks like she would be quite comfortable wearing black under normal circumstances, speaks about how much she will miss her grandmother Phyllis.
Three and a half months later, Jack, who was married to Phyllis for more than forty years, joins the bereavement group, led by Elaine. Harry introduces himself to Jack and they become friends. Marilyn is there too and she and Lois speak. Afterward, Lois gives Marilyn a ride because Marilyn walked there, as the audience already saw. Marilyn is afraid to drive. In fact, she knows very little about what to do now, so Lois will help her.
Lois and some other friends are eating in a restaurant when they see Donald checking her out. Donald introduces himself and says he is in real estate. The waitress later says Donald paid their bill.
Harry joins a dating site for seniors. He sees several women who interest him.
At another meeting, Sandi introduces herself to Jack and indicates she is interested in him. Harry teaches Jack how to cook but doesn't have much success.
Lois tries to teach Marilyn to drive but Marilyn isn't doing well. In fact, Marilyn nearly hits Jack's Mercury with her Buick. Jack is driving Sandi to a Chinese buffet. it's early, but the prices are great and they have to get there before the crowds.
Linda, Jack's daughter, visits with daughter Molly, who is nicer and more pleasant than she looks. They are going though Phyllis' things to decide what they want to keep and what needs to done with everything else. Molly finds diaries Phyllis wrote which have a lot of information Jack didn't know about, such as her regret that she gave up being a psychiatrist because she got married. Linda and Molly find out about Sandi and Linda is bothered because it hasn't been that long.
Molly goes to the pool. There are a lot of young people there, but Marilyn tells Lois she thinks that's nice, since it means families have come to visit. The pool is being used by a water aerobics class. Marilyn sees that one of the participants is that woman who ruined her life. She wants to leave.
Lois and Donald finally have a date. Lois wears inappropriate shoes and has a hard time walking when they have a picnic at the beach. Or they almost have a picnic. The sheet blows away and they just talk.
Harry and Florence sent photos to each other, and Florence is gorgeous despite being almost his age. Harry tells some white lies and colors his hair and puts green stuff on his face. They arrange to meet at her very nice apartment. They are having a good time dancing to pleasant music when he gets a call. Florence goes in the bedroom and when Harry is through on the phone, he comes in and she has put on something sexy. Harry is not ready for that and says when he was in the military, he saw prostitutes dress like that. The fact that he leaves money as he goes indicates Florence may actually be a professional.
Lois and Donald have another date where he teaches her to skate, though she has some trouble stopping safely.
Jack and Sandi have another date at his very pink house where he tries to cook for her. The smoke alarm goes off and while he is very apologetic and Sandi is a good sport and tries to eat, Sandi finally admits she brought a lasagna. They end up in bed.
Lois is out for a run the next morning as Sandi is leaving and Jack is wearing a robe. She visits Marilyn, who says the exterminator is there, and while the women are talking, the exterminator comes in. It is Donald. Lois is quite shocked, because she had been telling people he was a developer. It turns out he didn't lie but if Lois said anything about what she thought he did, he never denied it. Lois doesn't want to go out with Donald any more.
Marilyn eventually learns to drive and buys a Volkswagen Beetle convertible.
On another date at a nice restaurant, Jack and Sandi are having a nice time when Sandi's ex Leonard shows up and introduces himself and his young, hot new wife. Jack wonders why Sandi joined a bereavement group if she is only divorced. Sandi says she felt the same as if he had died. Then she says she and Jack should break up.
Sandi was not the only one who misrepresented herself. Lois admits to Marilyn her husband has been gone eight years but it is because of her son Matthew that she joined the group. Lois describes her son as "living" in Los Angeles but says she lost him two and a half years earlier.
Harry tries again and finds Lucille, who he went to high school with.
Marilyn sees a for sale sign in front of the house where the woman who hit her husband lives. She knocks on the door and confronts her because it might be her last chance. The woman says she too was upset and ended up having a breakdown, and is still in therapy, and yet that doesn't satisfy Marilyn.
As Christmas approaches, and some group members may be facing their first holiday without their special person, Elaine asks the group for suggestions for a New Year's Eve 2006 celebration. The decision is made to have a 50s dance.
Jack is miserable being alone so he makes up with Sandi.
Lois is also miserable being alone so she Marilyn go to the dance. Harry is there talking about Lucille and he leads a conga line.
At midnight Lois wants to leave and she calls a taxi. Before she can get in Donald shows up and says he still wants to date her and hopes she will agree. She leaves with him and Donald pays the cab driver.
Marilyn names her dog Oscar and agrees to let him in her bed.
