Zach Braff has said that he worked on the script and that he "tweaked the dialog a little bit". He also claims to have written the ending "porch" sequence.
Rachel McAdams was originally cast, but forced to drop out due to other commitments. Jacinda Barrett then stepped in to replace her.
It was rumored that Rachel Bilson called for a body double during the sex scenes because she was uncomfortable being nude in front of the camera. Although she did refuse to show her breasts on camera, she wore panties and did still complete the scene without any double.
The initials "Z.B." can be found carved in the porch when Zach Braff's character Michael is sleeping in front of the house waiting for Jacinda Barrett's character Jenna.
Michael's staying on the front door for several days is reminiscent of the East German film 'Die (1973) Legende von Paul und Paula'(The Legend of Paul and Paula), where Paul is also camping in front of Paula's apartment in order to win her back.
There is a poster of The Shins in Kim's dorm room. The band was featured on the soundtrack for Zach Braff's directorial debut film Garden State (2004).
Rachel Bilson nearly gave up her role in this film over a scene in which her character bared it all. In an interview with Playboy (of all publications), Bilson discussed her firm beliefs that getting naked is not a priority: "Movies can be sexy or sexual without showing things. It's almost a deal breaker. The movie was rated R, and they like to put in [skin] wherever they can, but I'm pretty strong-willed and believe it can be avoided." However, she did not utilize a body double in the movie and kept her nudity to a minimum.
Spoilers
The segment where Anna secretly visits her house in the middle of the night to watch Stephen through the window originally was scripted as a much longer series of scenes where Stephen goes through various rooms in the house and Anna spies on him from different locations, eventually falling out of a tree and alerting him to her presence. During filming producer Gary Lucchesi and director Tony Goldwyn both felt there was something wrong with the scene and there were too many complications involved in filming the stunt. It was Tom Wilkinson's idea to have his character simply sense Anna's presence without her having to do anything.
