2018 Oscars Best Animated Short nominee: ‘Garden Party’ is hopping with frogs having the time of their lives

2018 Oscars Best Animated Short nominee: ‘Garden Party’ is hopping with frogs having the time of their lives
If you ever wondered what it would look like to have a bunch of frogs partying in a suspiciously abandoned home, then “Garden Party” gives you that answer. Academy members in the short film branch took quite a shine to it as it became one of this year’s five nominees for Best Animated Short Film. It marks the first career nominations for Victor Caire and Gabriel Grapperon, two of the film’s six credited directors.

The film is set in a lavish mansion. Outside the mansion we see a frog hopping around the pool in the backyard and being followed by a slightly bigger frog. We start to see more of the house and notice that while there’s items all over the place, no one is actually there and the security cameras set up around it are shot. Another smaller frog is outside trying to catch a butterfly.

Contemporary Chinese Cinema: The Year So Far

  • MUBI
Contemporary Chinese Cinema is a column devoted to exploring contemporary Chinese-language cinema primarily as it is revealed to us at North American multiplexes.Over the last few years it has become increasingly easy to see mainstream Asian films in North America at the same time they are released in their home countries. Thanks to partnerships with small, international distributors, the major multiplex chains (AMC, Cinemark, Regal) have devoted a handful of screens in major markets to showing new releases from India, Korea, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of these titles fall under the radar of both critics and audiences outside the diasporic communities to which they are targeted. They play for a week or two and then disappear, outside of a handful of breakout titles. Last year Stephen Chow’s The Mermaid made headlines for its high per-screen averages in North America as it shattered domestic box office records in China.

Here’s When You Can Expect To See Children Of The Corn: Runaway

There are currently two sequels to iconic horror franchises being held by Dimension Films. They are, of course, none other than Hellraiser: Judgment and Children of the Corn: Runaway.

While both projects were already in an uncertain state of development, their productions no doubt took a troublesome turn with the whole Harvey Weinstein debacle. But now we’ve received a new update on the latter thanks to actress Marci Miller. According to her, we should expect to see the pic, in which Miller plays main character Ruth, in February/March 2018 – though she wouldn’t get anymore specific than that.

In case you’re unfamiliar with the film, here’s the official plot synopsis:

“Runaway tells the story of a young woman named Ruth, who finds herself pregnant after escaping a murderous child cult in a small Midwestern town. Ruth struggles to spare her son the horrors of her childhood while trying to outrun her past.

The show revolves around the life of the 17-year-old digital influencer and his family and friends. For season two of the show, Grier and his crew were filmed this summer along the Gulf Coast — including in areas hammered by Hurricane Harvey. The producers said they will donate a portion of the proceeds from the show to the American Red Cross for relief efforts.

Seasons two and three of “Top Grier” will be distributed on Complex Networks’ Rated Red digital channel — aimed at millennials in America’s heartland — on Go90. In addition, Complex Networks is now selling exclusive “Top Grier” merchandise, including T-shirts, sweatshirts, hoodies, fidget spinners and select items designed by Hayes, at ratedred.com.

A key piece of the strategy with “Top Grier” is to draw an audience from Hayes Grier’s fanbase of

Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth ‘Very Affectionate’ on Mexican Food Date Night in N.Y.C.
It was romance and Mexican food for Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth on Wednesday night.

The engaged couple was spotted enjoying a meal together at the SoHo location of Dos Caminos in New York City on Wednesday, according to an onlooker. The pair cozied up in a corner booth and dined on guacamole, corn off the cob, vegetable tacos and enchiladas made with three cheeses, grilled onions and salsa.

Hemsworth toasted the night with two margaritas, while Cyrus—who recently told Billboard she is “completely clean”—stuck with a bottled water.

“They were very affectionate towards each other,” added the source.

New Justice League Trailer Unites The Squad

Well, here it is, folks. The moment you, myself and just about everyone else with a pulse has been waiting for – the new Justice League trailer. Yes, we can’t believe it either, but up above you’ll be able to clock eyes on brand new footage from the upcoming blockbuster and after so many months of radio silence and concerning rumors, it feels damn good to finally be able to get our hands on this preview.

Releasing hot on the heels of those bite-sized promos, one for each member of the titular team, this new trailer finally brings everyone together for what looks to be a film of epic proportions. One which has seemingly taken everything wrong with Batman V Superman and Suicide Squad and thrown it out the window, instead favoring a lighter, more fun-filled approach. At least, that’s the sense we get from the footage here.

The Lego Batman Movie: references and Easter Egg guide

David Crow Feb 13, 2017

The movie, TV show, cartoon and comic references of The Lego Batman Movie...

This article contains major The Lego Batman Movie spoilers.

Holy plastic building blocks, Batman! Almost everything really was awesome about The Lego Batman Movie. After years of dark nights and grim glares at other superheroes, the newest adventure of the Caped Crusader, as voiced by Will Arnett’s perfectly overdone gravel, was a breath of fresh air. Not afraid to let Batman’s sidekicks have fun - even if our cantankerous main guy still prefers to wear only black and sing about “darkness” - The Lego Batman Movie is poised to entertain Bat-fans of all Bat-ages.

Still one of its best gags is its shameless (and relentless) use of references, cutaways, and in-jokes to overstuff its narrative with more meta-humor than the most unwieldy episode of Community. As a consequence, it’s easy to

‘The Neighbour’ Review

Stars: Josh Stewart, Alex Essoe, Bill Engvall, Melissa Bolona, Luke Edwards, Jaqueline Fleming, Ronnie Gene Blevins, Skipp Sudduth, David Kallaway | Written by Marcus Dunstan, Patrick Melton | Directed by Marcus Dunstan

It’s safe to say I’m a fan of the films of Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton. Between them, the duo have written and/or directed some fun fear flicks: Feast and it’s sequels (which I truly adore), Saw 4 – 7 and the fantastic pairing of The Collector and The Collection. It’s been four years since the latter film, their last feature, and now they’re back with The Neighbour – which also marks the Third time the filmmakers have worked with actor Josh Stewart.

Set in Cutter, Mississippi, The Neighbour follows two small-time drug-traffickers, John (Stewart) and Rosie (Essoe), who operate a weigh station next door to their creepy, hunting-obsessed neighbour, Troy. Planning to leave their drug-dealing life behind,

Top Directors Banking on Nostalgia

Top Directors Banking on Nostalgia
Mel Gibson, Warren Beatty and Robert Zemeckis have a trio of films on offer this month that could appeal to Academy voters longing for a throwback vibe, while Ben Affleck has another on the way in December.

Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge,” a World War II epic centered on conscientious objector Desmond Doss, feels like a prestige battle picture cut from the Allan Dwan/William Wellman mold.

“One of the best compliments I’ve received is, ‘Wow, it’s like the way they used to make films,’” Gibson said recently on Variety’s “Playback” podcast. “I said, ‘You mean like back in the ‘40s?’ And they said, ‘No, like back in the ’80s’ — like it’s ancient history!”

Such comments are a reflection, the director says, of the fact that the character of the feature-film business has changed. “It’s like chain restaurants or something,” he said. “I believe that if something is good,

Marcus Dunstan talks stunts, ‘Saw’ and his new film ‘The Neighbour’

Marcus Dunstan interview for The Neighbour.

Marcus Dunstan is a well known name in the horror realm. Alongside Patrick Melton he wrote four of the Saw films (IV – VII), as well as directing both The Collector and The Collection. He steps ever so slightly away from the horror genre though with his latest film – The Neighbour. The film is an intense thriller with nods to horror. We caught the film at Frightfest and thoroughly enjoyed it.

The film stars Josh Stewart and Alex Essoe as John and Rosie, a young couple that have been downtrodden by life. They make their money by helping out John’s Uncle, a man with heavy criminal ties. To make matters worse, their neighbour Troy (Bill Engvall) is exceptionally creepy. Desperate to break out of their rut, the pair decide to leave town after one last job. However, after John returns home and Rosie is

Interview: Co-Writer/Director Marcus Dunstan Discusses the Evil Next Door in The Neighbor

  • DailyDead
For over a decade now, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton have collaborated on bringing crimson-stained nightmares to the big screen, and while horror fans may associate the creative duo with gore galore due to their inventive Saw sequels (parts IV–VI) and creepy Collector films, their latest project, The Neighbor, opts for atmospheric tension over buckets of blood.

With The Neighbor coming out on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital HD, and VOD from Anchor Bay Entertainment on September 6th, I had the opportunity to talk with Dunstan about directing his third film, casting Bill Engvall as a charming villain, re-teaming with actor Josh Stewart, and the possibility of a third Collector movie.

Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today and congratulations on The Neighbor. I'm a big fan of what you and Patrick have done in the horror genre, and this film, being more of a southern thriller, is

Robots Fight Back in Incredible Sci-Fi Short Rise with Anton Yelchin

Rarely do we root for the robots when they rise up against humans in the films that deal with that subject matter. But in this sci-fi film, it’s hard not to root for them. The film is called Rise, and it’s set in the near future. Here's the logline: “Sentient robots are targeted for elimination after they develop emotional symmetry to humans and a revolutionary war for their survival begins.”

The short comes from director David Karlak and writers Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton (Feast). They did a fantastic job with it and it’s a proof of concept that they are hoping to turn into a feature film. It doesn’t hurt that they were able to cast Anton Yelchin and Rufus Sewell in the film and the special effects work is top-notch stuff!

The filmmakers raised $38,000 through crowdfunding to make this film, and I’m rooting
