- Minerva "Mini" Drogues (Nikki Reed) is a clever and adventurous high school senior who is bored with her life. Mini prizes her "unique experiences" (she calls them "firsts"). For excitement, and to add to her list of firsts, Mini decides to try being a call girl (by coming out naked from own birthday cake at her own birthday party). Mini hates her mother Diane (Diane moved to LA to become an actress. But she got knocked up by a producer as she calculated that 18 yrs of child support was better than some acting gig), who is best friends with Jelena Mariskova-Flachsman (Svetlana Metkina), the imported trophy wife of their family lawyer. The producer died a yr after Mini was born, forcing Diane to go back to acting. % yrs ago she met Martin, a Partner at a PR firm. Diane is screwing with their next-door neighbor Mike Rudell.
Her first client, however, has a guilty conscience and can't carry through with the act, which disappoints Mini. Her second client is decidedly more exciting: her stepfather Martin (Alec Baldwin). Martin is initially shocked when he learns of her identity (he initially blindfolded himself during intercourse per Mini's request), but soon a torrid love affair blossom between the two. Martin falls in love with Mini.
In order to be together, Mini and Martin concoct a plan to have Mini's mother Diane (Carrie-Anne Moss) declared insane. Martin can't leave Diane as she would get half and Martin doesn't have a Pre-nuptial agreement. Mini steals medicines from school and starts mixing them in Diane's martinis. Diane starts to have violent mood swings. Then Mini cancels her sex/massage appointment with celeb boy toy Fabrizio (Rick Fox), which leads Diane to break her hand on Jelena's face, who was getting "serviced" by Fabrizio next (in absence of Diane). Mini then orders an entire zoo at the house, pretending to be Diane, and makes it seem like Diane ordered it and forgot. Mini soon orders so many random things, that for Diane the doorbell becomes like a cannon.
Soon, Diane's entire social circle turns against her. Mini pays random strangers to call Diane to make it seem like she is being stalked. When Diane goes to the police, she is not able to produce any proof and is arrested for delusional behavior. A "scream" like encounter follows at home when Diane is alone. Diane scared to death and takes a half bottle of sleeping pills to calm herself. Martin returns home and feels this has gone too far and calls an ambulance to save Diane. But Mini convinces Martin to wait for the pills to take effect.
Mini convinces Martin to murder Diane, despite his initial resistance to the idea. They attempt to make it appear that Diane committed suicide (with the excess sleeping pills), but they soon attract the attention of Det. Dwight Garson (Luke Wilson) who believes that Mini and Martin killed her. Garson continues to find loopholes in Martin's story that he and Mini left for a movie at 8 pm and returned at 11 30 PM, to find Diane sitting in her car in the garage with the exhaust spewing Carbon monoxide. During questioning Martin slips up when he threatens Garson to give up or charge "us" with something. Martin is furious at Mini.
A nosy neighbor, Mike Rudell (Jeff Goldblum), is sexually obsessed with Mini (when Martin and Mini take a sex vacation, Mike also shows up at the resort with an escort. Martin believes that Mike suspects them having an affair). Martin receives pictures of him and Mini in the mail, from their vacation and believes that Mike sent them for blackmail. Martin is so flustered with all of this, that he ignores his work and loses one major client. As such, he is fired from his own partnership. Mini stops Martin from going over to Mike's and confronting him, but the next day she herself goes over to Mike's and spends an entire day with him, doing random stuff.
Garson tracks Mini at school and presents a video footage of Mini stealing drugs from the school medicine cabinet. She is cornered. She says that Diane made her steal the medicines. Garson then confronts Martin that while Diane died from the carbon monoxide fumes at around 9 30 PM, but her car gas tank was almost completely full. If the car was idling for 2 hours after her death, it would have used at least 4 gallons of fuel and not 1.
Martin learns that Mini had gone to Mike's house (and even starred in his reality show, where she had sex with a contestant), he and Mike get into a fight. Mini arrives to find Martin standing over the neighbor, ready to beat him into unconsciousness, and when the police arrive, they arrest Martin.
Mini visits Martin in jail and admits that the sexual pictures sent were actually from her in order to get Martin to think that Mike sent them. She also reveals that she assumed the police would eventually believe he killed Diane (since he was the more likely perpetrator). Mini, therefore, ends up getting away with murder, and inherits her mother's fortune.
The film ends with Mini giving a valedictorian speech, even though she is a C student; the school gave her straight A's out of sympathy for her mother's death. She offers advice to the graduating class about how to live a good life, that perversely alludes to her crimes without making her look too suspicious. The detective is present at the speech, clearly still suspicious of Mini, but knowing that he will probably never be able to prove that she was guilty of murdering her mother.
