Vertical Entertainment has released the first trailer from their upcoming action-thriller Lady Bloodfight, which is set for a theatrical release on May 5. The studio has also provided us with the first poster that takes us closer into the action, showcasing the characters who square off against each other in a brutal fighting tournament known as The Kumite. While this tournament bears the same name as the tournament portrayed in the 1988 classic Bloodsport, this upcoming action-thriller showcases an all-female tournament.

Lady Bloodfight centers on Jane (Amy Johnston), a beautiful but troubled American girl backpacking her way through Hong Kong. When she successfully fends off three thugs trying to rob her, she draws the attention of Shu (Muriel Hofmann), a Wudang champion, who is impressed by her raw street fighting abilities. Under Gilles Pélisson’s management team, the TF1 Group has significantly increased its commitment to TV drama production.

The splashy co-production slate includes international series such as the upcoming procedural series “Gone”; the miniseries “Just One Look,” based on Harlan Coben’s novel; and launch of projects and acquisitions via the group’s new subsidiary, Newen. “Gone” is the first project under the “trinity agreement” — a co-production pact among TF1, NBCUniversal and Germany’s Rtl.

Ara Aprikian, TF1’s executive VP for content, says procedural dramas have high potential in the European market.

“There’s a strong economic argument for procedural dramas, because serialized dramas have much less value,” he says. “They’re much more difficult to amortize on a free-to-air channel, unless we have a partner like Netflix or Amazon, because audiences have to follow the entire series and repeat screenings have much lower audiences.”

The Marseille Web Fest, a five-year-old international digital film festival to be held next month in France’s second largest city, has announced the eight-person jury that will preside over the 25 series slated to be screened at this year’s event.

The jury will include: international bestselling author C.J Daugherty, the actress Elodie Varlet of French soap opera Plus Belle La Vie, novelist and screenwriter Dan Franck, Ryme Wehbi of the French production company White Panama Films, Australian communications and media studies professor Sue Turnbull, Fullscreen exec Adam Dunlap, and Dailymotion’s director of entertainment and original content Alba Gautier.

Cannes– When France’s biggest commercial network group TF1 tied the knot with Fabrice Larue’s Paris-based indie powerhouse Newen last November, it made a big splash in the local television landscape, marking for the first-ever alliance between a network and a production entity in Gaul.

Ranking as the third biggest French production banner after Zodiak/Banijay and Lagardere, Newen has been delivering some of France’s most successful drama series, such as “Braquo” and “Versailles” for Canal Plus and hit daily soap “Plus belle la vie” as well as the long-running, female-driven cop show “Candice Renoir,” both for public broadcaster France Televisions. TF1 Acquires Majority Stake In French Production Group Newen
France’s top commercial network TF1 has acquired a 70-percent stake in Fabrice Larue’s Flcp, the holding company of Newen, the Paris-based production powerhouse behind high-profile French TV shows such as “Braquo” and the upcoming skein “Versailles.”

The acquisition of Newen marks TF1’s move into production and underscores its new focus on international co-productions and distribution.

“In line with the strategy of TF1 to position itself on content, this operation aims at developing a new activity, independently from the group’s channels,” said TF1 in a statement.

Newen – the second biggest producer of fiction in France — owns Telfrance, Capa, Be Aware and 17 juin Me, and has a pact with another company called Mascaret Films. Telfrance produces the highest-rated French soap “Plus Belle La Vie” while “Capa” its the maker of shows such as Canal Plus’ “Braquo” or “Versailles,” among other series.

Annecy: Les Armateurs Sets Paul Leluc For ‘French Riviera’ (Exclusive)

Annecy, France –France’s Les Armateurs, one of Europe’s most prestigious of animation production houses, has attached Paul Leluc, director of its TV toon series hit “The Long Long Holiday,” to helm “French Riviera,” the most ambitious of its animated feature productions.

The moves comes as Les Armateurs, which has won five Oscar nominations for its animated films, is studying entering live-action children’s entertainment, and “The Swallows of Kabul,” another flagship animated feature with a stunning teaser-trailer, has tied down both an international sales agent – Hengameh Panahi’s Celluloid Dreams — and domestic distribution in France via Memento Film Distribution.

Studiocanal is handling international sales on “French Riviera,” plus French distribution.

“’The Long Long Holiday’ had very good audiences, both on linear and catch-up TV, and was very well received by critics, and Paul Leluc has a great sense of how to tell a story,” said Ivan Rouveure, Les Armateurs executive managing director.

France Televisions cleans up at Fiction fest
PARIS -- French public TV group France Televisions was the big winner at the 9th annual Festival of TV Fiction, taking 13 of 16 prizes as the fest wrapped in La Rochelle over the weekend.

The 5-day event gave its grand prize to France 3's telefilm Maman est Folle (Mom is Crazy), which also took home awards for best screenplay, kid's choice and best actress -- for Isabelle Carre, who shared the prize with Marthe Keller of the network's Le Lien.

The film, directed by Jean-Pierre Ameris and written by Ameris and Olivier Adam, was produced by Escazal Films with the participation of France 3. It follows a young mother who forges an unlikely friendship with an illegal immigrant and helps him escape to London at the expense of her own family.

Daniel Prevost won the Best Actor award for France 2 telefilm Monsieur Joseph, which will air on the network on Wednesday during primetime.

The jury prize went to Le Lien. Popular Gallic soap Plus Belle la Vie took home the audience award for best TV series.

MONTE CARLO, Monaco -- The 2006 Monte Carlo Television Festival got off to a low-key start under balmy skies Monday night at the seaside Grimaldi Forum, as the public walked the red carpet elbow-to-elbow with some of their favorite French TV stars from the popular primetime soap, Plus Belle la Vie. A brief opening ceremony featuring a speech by Prince Albert II of Monaco, the festival's honorary president since 1988, preceded a screening of German-made Three Sisters, one of the 100 programs in competition from 23 different countries. Now in its 46th year, the six-day festival and showcase attracts a high-profile list of international TV celebrities, who will jet in for the annual celebration of programming that culminates with a black-tie awards ceremony.
