Jordan Peele Docuseries on Lorena Bobbitt Headed to Amazon

Amazon has ordered a four-part docuseries from Jordan Peele about Lorena Bobbitt.

“Lorena,” which will be directed by Joshua Rofé, “reveals the hidden truths in the notorious case of John Wayne and Lorena Bobbitt and challenges the long-held narrative that surrounded this event,” per Amazon’s announcement, and “provides a fresh perspective on the story of Lorena Bobbitt and how one event laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and increasing sensationalistic media coverage.”

“Jordan has proven himself as a captivating voice of social critique and we are excited to work with him on this project. ‘Lorena’ reframes Lorena Bobbitt’s story around issues of sexism and domestic abuse and offers Prime members an exclusive new view into how America got her story wrong and maybe continues to get it wrong,” said Heather Schuster, head of Unscripted, Amazon Originals.

“When we hear the name ‘Bobbitt’ we think of one of the most sensational incidents to ever be catapulted into a full blown media spectacle,” added Peele. “With this project, Lorena has a platform to tell her truth as well as engage in a critical conversation about gender dynamics, abuse, and her demand for justice. This is Lorena’s story and we’re honored to help her tell it.”

“Our hope for this series is to give viewers pause when the next scandal of the moment is presented to us as macabre entertainment,” Rofé said. “Often, there’s profound pain and trauma just beneath the surface of stories like Lorena’s.”

“Lorena” is executive produced by Peele and Win Rosenfeld for Monkeypaw, Rofé and Steven J. Berger for Number 19, Jenna Santoianni and Tom Lesinski for Sonar and produced by Monkeypaw, Sonar Entertainment and Number 19.

It’s Not TV: HBO, The Company That Changed Television: Fall and Rise

Failure is inevitable. Success is elusive.

Steven Spielberg

As HBO’s CEO, Michael Fuchs, who’d come up through the company’s programming side, had spent 11 years working to transform the service from a movie channel with some pleasant original filler into a true programming platform. Ironically, Fuchs’ vision wouldn’t come to full fruit until after he’d left the company in May 1995, and it would happen under a guy who had no programming experience at all: Jeff Bewkes, who took over the CEO’s slot after Fuchs’ departure.

A friend of mine in the company who’d worked with Bewkes once explained his programming philosophy while we were talking about some of the company’s big dollar extravaganzas, like Band of Brothers. Bewkes didn’t interfere with the creative side. “If you can make it make business sense to him, Jeff’ll say, ‘Go ahead.’ If you can

Steven Soderbergh is bringing Clive Owen to TV with "The Knick."

The 10-episode Cinemax series begins production in New York in September. “We are thrilled that Steven and Clive have chosen to bring this unique and exciting series to Cinemax," Michael Lombardo, president of HBO Programming, said in a statement.

Jack Amiel and Michael Begler wrote the pilot and will serve as executive producers alongside Owen, Soderbergh, Michael Sugar, and Gregory Jacobs.

Owen's TV credits include "Hemingway & Gellhorn," for which he was nominated for an Emmy, "Extras" and 1990s shows "Chancer " and "Sharman." Soderbergh's TV credits include "K Street" and "Unscripted."

Steven Soderbergh continues stretching definition of “retirement,” directs Clive Owen in Cinemax’s The Knick

The word “retirement” conjures images of an idle life, filled with napping in hammocks, passing out Werther’s Originals, and building mad shuffleboard skills. It would appear Steven Soderbergh views retirement in much the same way, only his naps are a seemingly never-ending work schedule, his Werther’s Originals are “final” projects like Side Effects and Behind The Candelabra, and his new leisure sport of choice appears to be series TV. Eight years after Unscripted—and a full decade (or two-and-a-half election cycles) after K Street—Soderbergh will continue his oddly busy retirement from directing by pulling one last heist ...
