Moviefone Takes On Rotten Tomatoes: Taps Review Site’s Senior Editor Grae Drake As ‘Ms. Moviefone’

As MoviePass and MoviePass Films comes under the Moviefone umbrella, the Helios and Matheson Analytics Inc. subsidiary has tapped former Rotten Tomatoes Senior Editor, Grae Drake, as “Ms. Moviefone” to become their leading brand personality. The announcement comes as Moviefone emerges as a new venture and premier destination for content, reviews and commentary.

As the new face of Moviefone, Drake will engage with the film community by interviewing filmmakers and celebrities, and she’ll appear at industry events to provide an inside look at the movies. Drake will be responsible for producing and hosting a series of new original video content that will live on the Moviefone site. She will also oversee the evolution of existing video content, such as the well-known “Unscripted” series, providing Moviefone with the flexibility to continue creating and growing its video library.

Nickelodeon Names Rob Bagshaw Head of Unscripted

Bunim/Murray alum Rob Bagshaw has been named executive vice president, unscripted content at Nickelodeon, the Viacom-owned network announced on Thursday.

In the newly created role, Bagshaw will lead development and production of unscripted content across all formats and platforms for Nickelodeon ranging from reality competition shows to live events like Kids’ Choice Awards and Kids’ Choice Sports. He will report to Nickelodeon president Brian Robbins.

Unscripted series are continually the most popular shows in every demo, and Rob has a proven talent for creating a wide range of hits,” Robbins said in a statement. “I’m excited to have him join our team, where he can use his experience and skills to create the next wave of fun, must-watch shows for our kids and family audience.”

Netflix Sets Premiere Date for ‘Death by Magic’ (Exclusive)

Netflix’s new show “Death by Magic” is being launched globally on Nov. 30, TheWrap has learned exclusively.

The docuseries follows British magician Drummond Money-Coutts (a.k.a. Dmc) on his mission to uncover the stories of magicians who died performing the most dangerous stunts ever attempted.

“Death by Magic” marks Los Angeles-based production company A. Smith & Co.’s first-ever project with Netflix, reuniting CEO Arthur Smith with Netflix’s vice president of Unscripted, Brandon Reigg. The pair formerly worked together on projects at NBC.

Will Ferrell and Adam McKay Economic Docuseries Headed to Amazon

Amazon Prime has ordered a finance and economy-themed docuseries from Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, and NPR business journalist Adam Davidson.

The untitled series, which doesn’t have a premiere date, will be hosted by Kal Penn.

Penn, an actor and former White House Associate Director of Public Engagement, will take viewers around the world to meet the geniuses, madmen and hucksters who make the decisions — and investments — that change our lives. MipFormats: ‘The Four’ in Development in 18 Countries as Fox Preps Season 2

As Fox starts pre-production on the second season of “The Four,” versions of the singing competition show are being worked up in numerous international territories, delegates at a Variety-hosted MipFormats session heard in Cannes on Sunday.

The show has been greenlit by broadcasters Ctc in Russia and Antena 1 in Romania. Armoza Formats, which created and distributes the show, has now also optioned it to Satisfaction for France, Magnolia for Italy, Shine in Portugal, Mastiff in Sweden, and Screentime in Australia, among others.

After a six-part debut season, the show has been given an extended second season order of 10 episodes on Fox in the U.S. Alex Piper, the network’s VP, alternative, said in Cannes that the challenge is to retain the DNA of the show over a longer run.

Jordan Peele Docuseries on Lorena Bobbitt Headed to Amazon

Amazon has ordered a four-part docuseries from Jordan Peele about Lorena Bobbitt.

Lorena,” which will be directed by Joshua Rofé, “reveals the hidden truths in the notorious case of John Wayne and Lorena Bobbitt and challenges the long-held narrative that surrounded this event,” per Amazon’s announcement, and “provides a fresh perspective on the story of Lorena Bobbitt and how one event laid the groundwork for the modern 24-hour news cycle and increasing sensationalistic media coverage.”

“Jordan has proven himself as a captivating voice of social critique and we are excited to work with him on this project. ‘Lorena’ reframes Lorena Bobbitt’s story around issues of sexism and domestic abuse and offers Prime members an exclusive new view into how America got her story wrong and maybe continues to get it wrong,” said Heather Schuster, head of Unscripted, Amazon Originals.

The Atx Television Festival announced Thursday a robust number of television panels and screenings joining its lineup of already impressive programming. John Singleton’s upcoming crack cocaine drama “Snowfall” gets the honors of being the Opening Night screening. FX’s The Americans has cast Tony Award winner Frank Langella to play the Jennings’ former handler, the network announced Thursday.

Langella (Frost/Nixon) will recur as Gabriel, who comes out of retirement to relieve Claudia (The MillersMargo Martindale) of her post.

In addition to his stage work, Langella has appeared in films such as Superman Returns and Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps. His TV work includes roles on Kitchen Confidential and Unscripted.

The Americans begins production on its third season this week.

Weekend Box Office: 'Maleficent' Opens Big, 'A Million Ways' Fires a Blank

Disney's "Maleficent" cast a strong spell at the box office with a $70 million debut.

Featuring Angelina Jolie's first live-action starring performance in years, "Maleficent" beat forecasts to easily top all films over the weekend. The PG-rated Disney release is a darker twist on "Sleeping Beauty," told from the villain's perspective.

Seth MacFarlane's Western comedy "A Million Ways to Die in the West" was out-gunned by "Maleficent." It opened in third place with a tepid $17.1 million.

Last weekend's top film, "X-Men: Days of Future Past" dropped to second with $32.6 million.
