Leading Cinematographers Contribute to EnergaCamerimage Online Talks
Mentoring emerging cinematographers has always been a key mission at the EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival and this year’s online version of the event features a score of streaming master classes and seminars that inform and offer insights from top filmmakers and technology experts.

Streaming through the end of 2020 (online.energacamerimage.pl), the talks and teach-ins are, with rare exceptions, accessible without a password or online Camerimage entry card – unlike the usual live format of master classes at the festival, which invariably sell out if you don’t find a seat at least 20 minutes before the start.

One of the buzziest events from the festival, which officially ran Nov. 13-20, is the virtual career masterclass with cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, in which he discusses his remarkable career, leading up to his latest feature, Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

The Netflix drama is built around the sensational political

Gist: Co-written by Dianne Houston, Marnie Dickens and Stratton, this follows Mary Seacole (Mbatha-Raw), a pioneering Jamaican nurse who became known during the Crimean War for her care of wounded British soldiers. HBO Max New Releases: July 2020
HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!

HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.

If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

HBO Max Announces Over 175 New Movies/TV Shows For July

HBO Max Announces Over 175 New Movies/TV Shows For July
When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Below you can find the full list of every movie and TV series coming to HBO Now, Go and Max next month, broken down by day of release. It includes an enormous amount of DC animated movies, mostly featuring Batman, the Justice League and Green Lantern. All of the Christopher Reeve Superman films will be up on HBO Max as of July,

Oscar Isaac might finally break through with the Academy in 2017

It seems like every year there’s a reason to revisit Oscar Isaac and the work that he’s done so far. This year, he may actually get that elusive first Academy Award nomination if things break the right way, but regardless of that, he remains an incredibly exciting actor. Oscar wise (no pun intended), he seems likeliest to contend with George Clooney’s directorial outing Suburbicon, though he also will be seen in a few days in what previously was seen as an awards player in The Promise. Throw in Star Wars: The Last Jedi and he’s an in demand actor, to say the least. As such, another repeat tribute to the man is certainly in order. Isaac deserves it, that’s for sure. This is how I would rank his ten best performances so far: 10. Robin Hood 9. The Two Faces of January 8. In Secret 7. Mojave 6. Star Wars

Felton: I look... is distinguished a word?

Lange: It's a word.

In Secret (2014, expires August 18th)

What is this? Oscar Isaac, Elizabeth Olsen, Tom Felton and Jessica Lange? Big name casts for movies that don't seem to actually exist that you suddenly realize do, in fact, exist, are kind of unnerving. Like how do movies that never really get released find financing to get made in the first place? Apparently Oscar Isaac plays an artist in this one (they're looking at a portrait he painted of Felton) so that's kind of smudgy hot regardless. Isaac with paint stains I mean.

Men weren't up to the task!

Captain America: Civil War movie review: the consequences of superpowers

Tough, unanswerable human questions frame spectacular, innovative action sequences that are like superhero ballets. This series just keeps getting better. I’m “biast” (pro): love the Marvel movies

I’m “biast” (con): nothing

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

What is the best way to deploy vastly superior abilities against less capable but nevertheless still very dangerous bad guys? How best to minimize collateral damage — of both the human and the infrastructure kind — when those vastly superior abilities are put to their use? What happens when people of good conscience, all of whom genuinely want nothing more than to increase net happiness and general well-being in the world, disagree over the answers to these questions? And who should get the final say: politicians sitting at desks thousands of miles away from the fields of battle, or the soldiers fighting those battles?

There’s a recent

Risen movie review: when habeas corpus gets weird

Initially intriguing detective tale of ancient Rome hops genres into fantasy, with a strange manic-preacher-dream-boy seduction of its pragmatic protagonist. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of “faith-based” movies

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

Here’s something we don’t see often on the big screen: a detective story set in the ancient world. There are lots of novels, but I can’t think of a single other movie in the mold of Risen, an initially intriguing mystery tale in which a politically ambitious Roman soldier, Clavius (Joseph Fiennes [Hercules, Running with Scissors], who is terrific here), is set to a policing task by Pilate (Peter Firth: Spooks: The Greater Good, Pearl Harbor), the Roman governor of the province of Judea in the Middle East. It seems that the followers of a local rabble-rousing preacher who was just executed believe that

Alec Bojalad Jan 16, 2020

Another original arriving in February is Utopia Falls (also premiering on February 14), which looks to be teenage-oriented series combining Harry Potter, The Expanse, and music. That sound like something that might interest you?

February 1 sees the arrival of plenty of films to enjoy like 300, When Harry Met Sally, The Fugitive, and 28 Days Later. That's about as diverse an array of genre films as you'll get.

Film Feature: The 10 Best Films of 2015, By Patrick McDonald

Chicago – Another year is about to slide towards the next one, so it’s time to look back at the cinema universe of 2015, the 10 Best Films of the year. In this arena, the intrepid “Über Critic” of HollywoodChicago.com, Patrick McDonald, will attempt to give his spin on the “best of” point of view.

And now we switch from third person to first person, so I – the aforementioned Patrick McDonald – will attempt to claim it all. It was another roller coaster year of robots, driving machines, pop stars, financial derivatives and Miss Universe. In other words, another year of inventive film creativity and philosophy.

This is the 2015 honorable mention section, and there were so many “eleventh place” films of note. My favorite superhero film was “Ant-Man,” for their mix of “small time” adventure and comedy. The dramas “Brooklyn,” “Sicario,” “Flowers,” “The Farewell Party,” “Nasty Baby” and “Spotlight” were excellent experiences.
