The Timeless Yet Underappreciated Allure of Eva Green

The Timeless Yet Underappreciated Allure of Eva Green
It’s 2006. James Bond, as rendered in this particular iteration by franchise newcomer Daniel Craig, is on a train to Montenegro as he prepares for his upcoming mission: a poker tournament, where he will compete against the notorious private banker and criminal mastermind known as Le Chiffre (Mads Mikkelsen). However, there’s one factor Bond hasn’t taken into account, and it’s the well-dressed woman in a business suit who elegantly sits herself across from him in the train car. But Vesper Lynd (Eva Green) isn’t merely the agent to the British Treasury that she asserts herself to be — over the course of the story she’ll become the first woman that Bond truly, deeply gives his heart to, as well as the first one to subsequently break said heart. Hers is a role that demands assertiveness and vulnerability, a captivating beauty with a keen mind, and someone

HBO Boss Teases How Samantha Will Be Written Out of ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot: ‘Friendships Fade’

HBO Boss Teases How Samantha Will Be Written Out of ‘Sex and the City’ Reboot: ‘Friendships Fade’
Nearly 17 years since the show ended on HBO, “Sex and the City” is coming back in the form of a reboot titled “And Just Like That,” named for one of columnist Carrie Bradshaw’s classic quips. While the series will pick up back in New York City with The Girls now in their 50s, one key element missing will be Kim Cattrall, who starred as the outspoken and sex-positive Samantha Jones. The actress has long been vocal about never wanting to return to Darren Star’s beloved franchise, which also spawned two movies, and so now the new version headed to HBO Max has to get creative about how it will explain the fan-favorite character’s absence.

HBO and HBO Max chief content officer Casey Bloys offered some insight into how that will happen in a recent interview with TV Line. “They’re not trying to say that these characters are reliving their 30s,

Darren McGarvey’s Class Wars review – the truth about social mobility

Darren McGarvey’s Class Wars review – the truth about social mobility
McGarvey – Aka Scottish rapper Loki – offers an intelligent look at the British class system, from Greggs to Lauriston Castle, and asks whether it’s ever possible to move within it

The Guardian has a general policy against reproducing people’s accents in print. Mostly, I presume, for ease of understanding and smoothness of communication – there’s a reason we took to standardised spelling after all – but partly, I suspect, because it allows prejudice and mockery to slip in. Either from the writer’s side or from the reader’s. We are free, but everywhere we are in sociolinguistic chains.

Which makes reviewing the opening episode of the four-part documentary Darren McGarvey’s Class Wars (BBC Scotland) a very interesting proposition. It concentrates largely on the part that accent and language play in how we differentiate social classes and – crucially – in stopping us moving between them. His own accent is inescapably

British press after Eng win: Anderson spell 'reverse-swing sorcery'

British press after Eng win: Anderson spell 'reverse-swing sorcery'
Chennai, Feb 9 (Ians) The British press lauded veteran fast bowler James Anderson for playing a huge role in England's 227-run win over India in the first Test here on Tuesday. The 38-year-old bowler took big wickets of Ajinkya Rahane, half-centurion Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant in a fiery spell on the fifth and final day.

The headline of leading newspaper the Guardian read: "Jimmy Anderson's moment arrives with over of reverse-swing sorcery."

"In India, Test matches unfold like bankruptcies -- ever so slowly and then all at once. For the first four days, and an hour more of the fifth, Jimmy Anderson was in the background of this game, a bit player. In the first innings he took on the job of bowling tight and dry, so that the bowlers at the other end would have the freedom to be more attacking," wrote Andy Bull in the paper.

Moufida Tlatli, Silences of the Palace director, dies aged 73
Tunisian director of multi-award-winning features won wide acclaim for film about the trauma suffered by generations of women

Moufida Tlatli, the pioneering Tunisian film-maker behind much-admired festival hits The Silences of the Palace and The Season of Men, has died aged 73. News media said that she died on Sunday, with the news confirmed by the Tunisian ministry of culture.

Tlatli remains best known for her breakthrough 1994 feature The Silences of the Palace, a lyrical study of a woman’s return to an abandoned royal residence, which tackled the themes of exploitation and trauma as experienced across generations of Arab women. It won a string of international awards, including the Sutherland trophy at the London film festival for the most “original and imaginative” film of the year, and was named as one of Africa’s 10 best films by critic and director Mark Cousins. The film was inspired by her mother’s

#FreeBritney: Understanding the Fan-led Britney Spears Movement

#FreeBritney: Understanding the Fan-led Britney Spears Movement
On April 22nd, 2019, around 50 Britney Spears fans wielding neon posters bearing the hashtag #FreeBritney gathered outside of West Hollywood City Hall. The collection gathered peacefully, wearing her merchandise, playing her hits and explaining to the news teams on site that they were collectively concerned, specifically about the state of her long-running conservatorship. Tess Barker and Barbara Gray, originators of the #FreeBritney movement, probably never had such a scene in mind when they launched their podcast Britney’s Gram in November 2017.

Barker and Gray gathered with fellow #FreeBritney supporters again shortly thereafter,

Even the Writer From Emily in Paris Thinks I May Destroy You Deserved a Golden Globe Nom

Even the Writer From Emily in Paris Thinks I May Destroy You Deserved a Golden Globe Nom
The nominations for this year's Golden Globe awards have just been announced, and unsurprisingly, mistakes have been made. Once again, there's a distinct lack of diversity within the list, nominations that absolutely do not make sense, and a number of award-deserving releases that were ignored. Shows like Never Have I Ever and Bridgerton didn't receive any recognition within the nominations, despite being hugely praised for their diverse casting and storytelling when they were first released.

Perhaps the biggest mistake, however, was the fact that the somewhat problematic Emily in Paris was nominated for two awards, whilst of the most popular and critically acclaimed shows of 2020, I May Destroy You didn't make the list of all. But it's not just fans who are upset. Deborah Copaken, a writer on Emily in Paris, spoke to The Guardian about the nomination, admitting that even she believed that Michaela Coel's hard-hitting drama deserved

‘I May Destroy You’ Golden Globes Shutout Ignites Hollywood Outrage: ‘Racism Is the Only Explanation’

‘I May Destroy You’ Golden Globes Shutout Ignites Hollywood Outrage: ‘Racism Is the Only Explanation’
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s decision to shut out Michaela Coel’s acclaimed “I May Destroy You” from the 2021 Golden Globe nominations has stirred outrage in Hollywood, more so than any other nominations snub in recent memory. Deborah Copaken, a writer on the Golden Globe-nominated comedy series “Emily in Paris,” published an op-ep in The Guardian railing against the HFPA for omitting “I May Destroy You” in the limited series categories. Copaken wrote she was “stunned” how “Destroy You” was shut out when “Emily in Paris,” which was mostly mocked and lambasted by television critics, made the cut.

“I tried to avoid reading its criticism, but I don’t live under a rock. It never occurred to me that our show would be nominated,” Copaken writes, acknowledging that a show about “a white American selling luxury whiteness, in a pre-pandemic Paris scrubbed free of its vibrant African and Muslim communities” was bound to rankle.

‘Emily In Paris’ Writer Deborah Copaken Rages At ‘I May Destroy You’s Golden Globes Snub

‘Emily In Paris’ Writer Deborah Copaken Rages At ‘I May Destroy You’s Golden Globes Snub
Deborah Copaken, a writer on Netflix’s hit series Emily In Paris, has said the success of her show in the Golden Globe nominations was blemished by the fact that I May Destroy You was overlooked.

Emily In Paris was one of the surprise packages of Wednesday’s Globes after the show was nominated for best TV series, musical or comedy. Leading lady, Lily Collins, is also up for best actress in a television musical or comedy.

By contrast, Michaela Coel’s blisteringly authentic BBC/HBO limited-series, I May Destroy You, was a shock omission, despite winning near-universal critical acclaim for its portrayal of a woman piecing together the events of a night in which she was sexually assaulted.

After reading about the snub in Deadline, Copaken tweeted that it was “just wrong.” She later expanded on her comments in an op-ed for The Guardian, in which she explained that

Yep, HBO's The Investigation Is Based on a True Story, and It's Pretty Horrifying

Yep, HBO's The Investigation Is Based on a True Story, and It's Pretty Horrifying
The latest entry into the true crime genre is The Investigation, HBO's Danish crime series about the disappearance and murder of a journalist. The stranger-than-fiction tale is, in fact, based on a true story - one you actually might remember seeing on the news only a few years ago. Be forewarned, though: it's a pretty gruesome tale.

The Investigation is a fictionalized account of the attempts to solve the murder of Swedish journalist Kim Wall, who was killed in 2017 under odd circumstances that soon made international headlines. According to the BBC, on Aug. 10, 2017, Wall boarded a private submarine owned by eccentric Danish inventor Peter Madsen, whom she planned to interview about his plans to build a rocket that could be launched into space. An experienced journalist, the 30-year-old Wall had been chasing the story for some time and accepted an invitation to visit Madsen on his boat to do the interview.

Former Daily Mail Editor in Running to Lead U.K. Media Regulator Ofcom
The former editor of British tabloid The Daily Mail, Paul Dacre, could be next to lead U.K. media regulator Ofcom.

According to The Guardian, Prime Minister Boris Johnson is close to appointing the journalist — who ran The Daily Mail from 1992 to 2018 — as chair of the powerful org, which regulates the country’s TV, radio and video on demand sectors. The Guardian, citing Whitehall sources, reported Sunday that Johnson is close to making the appointment and could also reward the 72-year-old Dacre with a peerage.

The potential appointment is controversial due to Dacre’s right-wing political leanings. More recently, under his leadership, the Daily Mail set out a strong pro-Brexit agenda that played a key role in affecting public opinion over the country’s divorce from the European Union.

Ofcom employees are meant to be politically neutral.

While The Guardian notes that the candidate is being met with resistance from some within the government,

Charmed (2018) Season 3 Episode 2 Review: Someone's Going to Die
Now that was a finale! Or it was a penultimate episode. Or, well, it was the second episode of a season that is a direct continuation of the last one thanks to a pandemic, and you get the point.

Magic was up for grabs on Charmed (2018) Season 3 Episode 2 as Vivienne obtained a device called the Prism that allowed her to siphon magic for herself.

The sisters did everything in their power to stop her, but were they successful? Or, did they end up creating more problems for themselves? Let's be honest; we all know what the right answer is here.

If you are judging "Someone's Going to Die" as a conclusion to Charmed (2018) Season 2, then you would say that it was pretty epic and that the high stakes set by the writers paid off.

But if you are critiquing it as one of the first installments into Charmed (2018) Season 3, you

Oscar-Winning Producer Rise Films Plans First Drama Series On Phone-Hacking Scandal That Rocked Rupert Murdoch’s Media Empire
Exclusive: Oscar and Emmy-winning British production company Rise Films is developing the first major television drama series on the phone-hacking scandal that shook the very foundations of Rupert Murdoch’s media empire in the early noughties.

Rise Films, which made Oscar-winning Netflix doping documentary Icarus, will use the series to provide an insider’s perspective on the industrial-scale illegal information gathering at British tabloid newspaper, the News Of The World, after securing exclusive access to the journalists and private investigators who intercepted the voicemails of Hollywood stars, politicians, and murder victims.

The series will be penned by Luke Neal, the breakout writer behind ITV’s David Tennant drama, Des, which told the story of British serial killer Dennis Nilsen and was the broadcaster’s highest-rated drama of 2020. Saul Dibb, the helmer of The Salisbury Poisonings, BBC One’s most-watched drama in six years, has been attached to direct the phone-hacking series.
