Joseph Campanella Dead at 93

Actor Joseph Campanella died on Wednesday, May 16. He was 93.

Campanella, who received a Tony Award nomination in 1962 for best supporting actor for his performance in "A Gift of Time" along with Emmy nominations for Days of our Lives and Mannix, died of natural causes, his daughter-in-law, Sandy Campanella, said.

Campanella received his first Emmy Award nomination for playing private eye Joe Mannix's boss on the first season of the 1967-75 CBS series Mannix. His character's name, Lew Wickersham, was a sly reference to then-McA head Lew Wasserman and Lankershim Boulevard, an entryway to Universal Studios.

However, Intertect, the heartless crime-fighting corporation that Wickersham headed, was written out after the first season as Mannix (Mike Connors) went out on his own, and Campanella's contract was not renewed.

The actor also appeared in the recurring role of Ed Cooper, the ex-husband and father on CBS' One Day at a Time,

Cannes Review: Hirokazu Kore-eda’s ‘Shoplifters’ Finds Empathy and Grace In the Lives of Petty Criminals

With Like Father Like Son (2013), Our Little Sister (2015), and After the Storm (2016) all premiering one after the other at the Cannes film festival and The Third Murder getting a berth last autumn in Venice, it seemed as if Hirokazu Kore-eda, now well settled into this mature career groove, was making great films with every other effort. So does Shoplifters — which has the director once again competing for the Palme d’Or — adhere to this pattern? It would seem so.

After the peculiar courtroom detours of Murder, Kore-eda returns to familiar ground — and returns to form — with Shoplifters, yet another story of unusual family setups and one that, once again, ponders questions of what exactly constitutes normal or even healthy choices when raising a child.

The story focuses on one such unconventional family, this time made up of an older matriarch named Hatsue (played by Kore-eda regular Kirin Kiki); Nobuyo and

Speaking to Variety, the actress has been chatting about stepping into the shoes of Julie Andrews and what drew her to the film, which reunites her with her Into the Woods director Rob Marshall.

“Rob Marshall called me a couple of years ago and pitched it to me,” said Blunt. “The script hadn’t been written and they hadn’t written the songs, they were just crafting a narrative. He explained that this was much more in the same world as the books. It’s set in the ’30s during the Great Depression, which is when P.L. Travers wrote them. It was the idea of having a darker backdrop in which hope could reappear from the skies.

A Warning for Broadcast TV: When There Are Too Many Shows to Watch, Generic Titles Like ‘Deception’ Just Don’t Cut It

  • Indiewire
ABC just premiered its latest twist on the cop procedural format — a pretty fun show starring Jack Cutmore-Scott as Cameron Black, a stage magician who decides to use his talents to help the FBI solve crimes while also investigating a mystery of his own.

A magician doing illusions to solve crime is a fresh twist on the genre, Cutmore-Scott is a charming lead, the supporting cast is fantastic, and the magic seen in the pilot is really cool. But what’s this show titled? “Deception.”

That’s right, “Deception” — not to be mistaken for the 1946 film starring Bette Davis and Claude Reine, the 2008 film starring Ewan McGregor and Hugh Jackman, the 2013 NBC series about a lady detective investigating her childhood best friend’s murder, or countless other low-budget films over the years. “Deception” is a one-word title so generic and bland that by the end of this sentence, you’ll

New York City Crowned Queen of Pilot Season

Television actors in New York City: Are you ready for some good news? After some slow seasons, NYC is now topping the list of locations for new TV pilots. With a total of 12 full-length pilots being shot in the Big Apple this year, including two straight-to-series productions, the city is seeing a boom in filming for the small screen. In a list outlining the locations of television filming, Deadline reported that Los Angeles is runner-up with eight new shows filming there this season. This season’s uptick in shoots in America’s most iconic city—four more than last year—can likely be attributed to New York State’s generous filming tax credit, which was expanded last year. Under the legislation, production companies can get a 30 percent tax credit if they shoot in-state. CBS has the most productions in New York’s current pilot lineup, including “Murphy Brown,” “God Friended Me,
