Although this film was produced and released prior to An Easter Carol (2004), that story was actually written first. The two were written as a matched set of "bookends" for the two most important holidays in Christianity.

Real-life playwrights W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan (a.k.a. Gilbert and Sullivan) are referenced in several ways: Cavis and Millward are loosely inspired by Gilbert and Sullivan On the wall of Cavis' office are framed posters for "H.M.S. Pinafore" and "The Mikado", two of Gilbert and Sullivans' most famous works The Asparagus family becomes the Gilbert family Also, The Mikado was later used as the basis for the final segment of VeggieTales: Sumo of the Opera (2004).

Phil Vischer originally wanted to use Rebecca St. James' recording of 'O Come, O Come Emmanuel' for the end titles for this video, but was unable to acquire the rights (a new recording was used instead, but with a similar musical arrangement). However, because of the contact he had with St. James during the negotiations, he was able to arrange for her to do the character voicework as Hope in the sequel, An Easter Carol (2004).
