Storyline

Against his father's wishes, a young psychic prodigy named Razputin ("Raz" for short) leaves his life in the circus and sneaks into Whispering Rock, a summer camp where young psychics like him can learn to use their powers, and maybe someday become "Psychonauts", psychic secret agents who battle the forces of evil. Raz manages to impress the camp's head counselor, Morceau Oleander, as well as visiting Psychonauts Sasha Nein and Milla Vodello, who agree to let him stay... but only until his father comes to pick him up. But something's amiss at Whispering Rock: a sinister force is stealing the brains from Raz's fellow campers, leaving them mindless, TV-obsessed zombies. Raz decides to put his growing arsenal of psychic powers to good use and investigate the strange goings-on. Along the way, he'll journey into the minds of those around him, and face perils ranging from mad scientists to giant monsters to the psychotic mental constructs lurking within the deranged minds of insane asylum ... Trivia

Originally Psychonauts was going to be published by Microsoft, and was set to be an Xbox exclusive. Development though got caught between the transition of the original Xbox and the Xbox 360. Microsoft wanted an Xbox 360 port, but was not willing to give the additional funding to do so. Microsoft subsequently pulled out of publishing since they didn't want to soley release the game for the original Xbox, and funding for an Xbox 360 port couldn't be established. Eventually Majesco picked up publishing for the game, and Psychonauts then became a multiplatform title for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox as well as the PC. See more »

Quotes

Coach Oleander: Is your name "Joey"?
Raz: No.
Coach Oleander: Because I'm going to call you "Slowy Joey".
Raz: That's not my name.
Coach Oleander: What's that, Slowy? I can't hear you! You're talkin' too slow!

Best story/characters/writing since the golden age of Lucas Arts!
24 January 2008 | by imyourcanarySee all my reviews

If you grew up hooked on quirky, funny Lucas Arts adventure games like Monkey Island, Maniac Mansion/Day of the Tentacle, and so on, this game is for you. You might not realize it, since it's disguised as an action-packed 3D platformer, but this game has the heart of any of those greats. You spend as much time exploring, talking and finding/using items as you do smashing and burning things with your awesome psychic powers. The dialogue is hilarious, the voice acting is superb (anyone notice that Raz is actually Zim, from Invader Zim?), and there are plenty of funny gems to be found by those who think creatively enough to find them (light a squirrel on fire for some funny lines from Raz, for example). The only problem is the action and difficulty level is a bit inconsistent throughout: some levels are excruciatingly difficult and some are a breeze, in no particular order. However, the overall fun and vision of the game is more than enough to keep you pressing through the more frustrating moments. Definitely a must-play.
