Annette Bening will be honored Jan. 19 with the Lynn Stalmaster Award for Career Achievement at the 32nd annual Artios Awards, presented by the Casting Society of America at the Beverly Hilton Hotel.

The Csa recognizes career achievement by looking at an individual’s overall contribution to the industry.

“We’re privileged and honored to have Annette as our recipient this year, which we renamed the Lynn Stalmaster Award to honor his achievements in the casting profession, which include the first honorary Academy Award ever given to a casting director at this year’s Governors Awards,” said Richard Hicks, Csa president.

The Oscars’ current problems are a lot like baseball’s, back in the day. The game is too white, too macho and a little too overloaded with grizzled veterans for many fans’ comfort.

But encouraging signs can be spotted over in the writers’ division, where nine of this year’s 10 screenplay contenders were penned, in whole or in part, by first-time nominees.

Only Nick Hornby of “Brooklyn”; Ethan and Joel Coen of “Bridge of Spies”; Tom McCarthy of “Spotlight”; and Pete Docter of “Inside Out” have previously been named Oscar all-stars. Their writing partners and others, a remarkable 15 in all, are being called up to the Big Show for the first time. And that includes four women, the largest such number since 2007.

Maybe no one broke the color bar this year, but when it comes to new voices being heard, it’s truly the Year of the Rookie.

‘Carol’ Screenwriter Adapting ‘Telex From Cuba’ For Paramount TV, Anonymous Content

“Carol” screenwriter Phyllis Nagy is adapting the 2008 novel “Telex From Cuba” as a TV series for Paramount Television and Anonymous Content.

The novel by Rachel Kushner revolves around life in 1950s in Cuba just before the Castro revolution. The book was finalist for a National Book Award. Nagy is on board to create the TV series and serve as showrunner should the project go the distance.

Nagy last week earned an adapted screenplay Oscar nomination for penning the Cate Blanchett starrer “Carol,” another 1950s-set story.

Nagy will exec produce “Telex” with Anonymous Content’s Rosalie Swedlin and Adam Shulman. Anonymous Content’s production arm is on fire with two best picture Oscar noms this year — for “The Revenant” and “Spotlight” — and the Golden Globe win earlier this month for its USA Network drama “Mr. Robot.”

On the morning of the press conference for Todd Haynes' Carol, starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara, I met up with fellow First Time Fest juror Christine Vachon of Killer Films and Number 9 Films' Elizabeth Karlsen. Oscar Nominations Rare for Portrayals of the Same Character in the Same Film

[Warning: Potential spoilers ahead for Interstellar.]

Only two times in Oscar history have there been Oscar nominations for two actors playing the same character in the same film. The first time this happened was in 1998 when Kate Winslet received a lead actress nomination for her portrayal of a young Rose in Titanic (1997) and Gloria Stuart received a supporting actress nomination for Old Rose. Winslet did it again in 2002 when she was nominated for her supporting role as Young Iris Murdoch in Iris (2001) and Judi Dench was nominated for her lead role.

More often than not, when there are multiple portrayals of a character in a film, there is a child actor and the adult who gets the more prominent role and the Oscar nomination, such as with Forrest Gump (1994). Tom Hanks won an Oscar for his portrayal of Forrest Gump, while Michael Conner Humphreys played Young Forrest.

Though the 2013 Emmy Awards gave us more than a few unexpected triumphs, the Twitter consensus is correct: The ceremony felt sad, and that’s because the otherwise rapid-fire award handout was stopped in its tracks every 15 minutes by a new “In Memoriam” tribute.

Rooney Mara to Star in ‘Carol’
Rooney Mara has been cast in Todd Haynes’ “Carol,” an adaptation of best-selling author Patricia Highsmith’s “The Price of Salt.”

Mara will replace Mia Wasikowska in the role and stars alongside Cate Blanchett.

Pic, which is penned by Phyllis Nagy (“Mrs. Harris”) and helmed by Haynes (“I’m Not There”), is a love story about pursuit, betrayal and passion that follows the burgeoning relationship between two very different women in 1950s New York.

One is a girl in her twenties working in a department store who dreams of a more fulfilling life while the other is a wife trapped in a loveless, moneyed marriage desperate to break free.

Number 9 Films’ Elizabeth Karlsen and Stephen Woolley produce the pic, which is co-developed and co-financed by Film4. Christine Vachon’s Killer Films will co-produce.

HanWay Films is repping international sales and pic has already sold to The Weinstein Co. in the U.

The "Jane Eyre" actress has bowed out of the lesbian love-affair drama "Carol," with Rooney Mara stepping in to replace her, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"Carol," directed by Todd Haynes ("Far From Heaven" and "I'm Not There"), depicts an unhappily married woman in 1950s New York (Blanchett) who longs to leave her husband behind but fears losing her daughter. She falls for a department-store employee who also pines for a better life (Mara).

The project was first announced over a year ago with an excellent pair of leads in Cate Blanchett and Mia Wasikowska, with John Crowley ("Boy A," "Closed Circuit") directing. Exclusive: A potential single-camera comedy series for HBO is building a formidable team. Jay Roach is set to direct the project, titled The Third Coast, which has Annette Bening attached to star. I hear Bening and the producers are doing an informal reading to get a feel for the show before they take it formally to HBO, the network for which it is earmarked. Written by Paul Rudnick, Third Coast revolves around a larger-than-life casting director (Bening) in New Mexico. Rudnick, Roach and John Lyons executive produce. The Third Coast brings Oscar-nominated Bening back to HBO where she toplined the 2005 movie Mrs. Harris, earning an Emmy nomination.
