Storyline

Occupied Palestine: A serene landscape now pockmarked by military checkpoints. When a Palestinian film crew decides to avert a closed checkpoint by taking a remote side road, the political landscape unravels, and the passengers are slowly taken apart by the mundane brutality of military occupation. Both a visual poem and a narrative about the fragmentation of a people, "like twenty impossibles", also questions the politics of filmmaking and the opportunism of artists. Written by philistine films

Interesting, but this film also made me feel rather uncomfortable
13 May 2008 | by See all my reviews

This film is set in Israeli occupied territory and I think the purpose of the film makers was to get the viewer to hate the Israelis and the occupation army. If that wasn't the purpose, then they sure could have fooled me.

The film has no real context. Instead, it just begins with a van full of people you later realize are film makers. They are trying to get into part of Jerusalem but are barred at a military checkpoint. Not wanted to be stopped from their task, the group turns around and tries another road into town. However, they are stopped once again and the Israeli soldiers are rather nasty towards the film team. After a bit of harassment, the film ends. No real beginning or ending--just a snippet that shows that the Israeli army acts, at times, like fascists.

The problem is that if you have no idea about causes and effects of the violence in the Middle East, you are given a very inaccurate view of politics in the region. Sure, the soldiers weren't particularly nice but given that nail bombs and jihad are the norm, the film seemed very disingenuous in only showing this side. No matter how rude the soldiers were (and they were actually played by Palestinians, not Jews), at least they weren't blowing up innocent people in the name of God.

In fact, as I watched the film, it seemed less like it wanted to show a balanced view of the Israeli conflicts. Instead, the film seemed to loudly proclaim "Isreal sucks"! Considering how antisemitism has been on the rise throughout Europe as well as the rest of the world in recent years, I really found the film very disturbing.

By the way, for a much better film about this same subject, try watching the Oscar-winning short WESTBANK STORY. Now THAT'S a great film that takes a more honest and objective viewpoint--and features both real Jews and Palestinians in the leading roles.
