Tifa's fighting style against Loz mirrors some of her Limit Breaks from the game. She opens up with Beat Rush, comes back with a Water Kick, backs him into the corner with Somersault, and ends with Meteor Strike.
According to director Tetsuya Nomura in the DVD Commentary, the original movie was only supposed to be twenty minutes. The details of the original story are sketchy, but from what little Nomura has said about it, all that is known is that it featured someone requesting a message to be sent to Cloud. The message is then relayed to Cloud through several children and although Nomura insisted that he very much liked the original script, he decided to make the project more grand in scope because early word of the project generated so much interest that he couldn't resist the demands for the film to be feature length.
Kadaj's weapon is named the "Souba". Loz's weapon is named the "Dual Hound". Yazoo's weapon is named the "Velvet Nightmare". Cloud's sword is named the "First Tsurugi". His original "Buster Sword", given to him by Zack, is used to commemorate the spot Zack was killed. Cloud's bike is named "Fenrir".
Bahamut is a recurrent creature in the Final Fantasy series. In Final Fantasy VII (1997) there are three of variations; Bahamut, Neo Bahamut and Bahamut Zero. The one in the movie is another new one; Bahamut Sin.
In the battle between Tifa and Loz, when Loz's cellphone rings, his ring tone is the music that is played after a victorious battle in the Final Fantasy games. Coincidentally, the music played during the battle is the Final Fantasy VII (1997) battle music reprized.
Marlene is an adopted daughter of Barret. her real father was an old friend of Barret, Dyne. He died fell off the cliff after fighting with Barret at the bottoms of Gold Saucer in the original game. Like Barret, Dyne use a cybernetic gun on the left arm as a weapon,while Barret on the right arm.

Cloud uses five noticeable limit breaks from the original video game. He uses Blade Beam when he is fighting Loz and Yazoo at the Forgotten City. Then he uses Braver when he is fighting Bahamut Sin. He uses Climhazzard to defeat Bahamut Sin. He uses Omnislash to defeat Sephiroth, which is also the attack he uses to defeat Sephiroth in the game. The fifth technique he uses is Finishing Touch, which is used on Kadaj.
