‘The Intruder’: Dennis Quaid Is Surprisingly Effective As The Creepy Villain In This Fun Thriller [Review]

Watching Dennis Quaid as a villain in “The Intruder” is like seeing my dad as the villain in “The Intruder,” but, you know, if my dad could act. There’s something so unsettling about watching the charming, affable-seeming star of “The Parent Trap,” “The Rookie,” and “In Good Company” be a creep in this home invasion thriller – especially because he’s so good at it.

Dennis Quaid Says His Twins are Thriving 10 Years after a Medical Mistake Nearly Killed Them
Dennis Quaid is a grateful man.

Weekend Report -'Compton' Tops the Charts Again

Weekend Report -'Compton' Tops the Charts Again
Straight Outta Compton fell 56% in its second weekend but still managed to take first place on the box office charts with $26.8M. It's Universal's 13th weekend with a film in the #1 position. Meanwhile the other new titles did little to turn around an August that can't compete with the record-breaking, $1B results of last year and the top 12 was down 10.46% from the same frame last year.Universal added 268 venues to the hit biopic's 2,757 venues, for a total of 3,025, which feels like a bit of a tacit admission by the studio that they should have opened Compton wider its first week. They increased the theater count for Jurassic World only 17 screens its second week, but that brought it to a whopping 4,291. Furious 7 was only given 18 more screens its second week but that brought it up to 4,022. Still, Compton's per screen average (psa) its first week was $21,835, while Jurassic World astonished

Lily Tomlin: Not Your Everyday ‘Grandma’

Paul Weitz can’t and won’t be pigeonholed, as writer or director. His credits range from American Pie and Nutty Professor II: The Klumps to About a Boy and In Good Company. His latest effort debuted to great response earlier this year at South by Southwest, an ideal showcase for this indie drama. Grandma offers Lily Tomlin a juicy leading role and audiences a satisfying experience on a modest scale. What really makes it work is Weitz’s attention to detail in delineating his characters and his keen eye for casting. Every part matters to him; even actors who have just a few lines manage to leave an impression, among them Laverne Cox and the late Elizabeth Peña. ...

Time Machine: Sensational Scarlett J. in Purple

Scarlett Johansson Oscar dress Scarlett Johansson at the Oscars Looking great in a long purple dress, Scarlett Johansson displays her tight-fitting costume and bare back at the 83rd Academy Awards held on Feb. 27 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood. Oscar 2011 co-host and Best Actor nominee James Franco (for Danny Boyle's 127 Hours) thus introduced Johansson and fellow Oscar presenter Matthew McConaughey: "I am six degrees of Kevin Bacon away from our next two presenters. Figure it out on the Internet." Well, if you're lucky. Some have remarked that Franco was a more effective Oscar host online, where he tweeted some of the evening's to-dos, than on the stage of the Kodak Theatre. His fellow equally panned Oscarcast host was actress Anne Hathaway. Scarlett Johansson movies Scarlett Johansson has been featured in more than 40 films since her debut at age 10 in Rob Reiner's North, back in 1994. Johansson, in fact,

Scarlett Johansson Flashes Rib Tattoo on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon”

Always a fan of body art, Scarlett Johansson exposed one of her lesser-known tattoos while promoting “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” last night (April 30).

The “In Good Company” actress wore a gorgeous white dress with a keyhole cutout that displayed what appeared to be a bird that was inked on her right ribcage.

And in the latest promotional spot for her “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig this weekend, Scarlett compared ink with SNL cast member Cecily Strong and musical guest Wiz Khalifa. Strong began, “Hey who here has the most tattoos? I have three.” Johansson replied, “I have six,” and Wiz chimed in, “I have 411.”

Tff 2015 Daily Recap: April 17th

“Live from New York, it’s the Tribeca Film Festival.”

I’m sure that is how some people’s coverage of this year’s Tff started off. It makes sense considering the opening night film was a documentary about Saturday Night Live! Plus, some writers can’t help but resort to puns and cheap gimmicks to appear witty. Hell, I used it and haven’t even seen the film yet. But my TriBeCa experience didn’t start off with belly laughs. Instead it began with a double feature of films about shitty parents.

The Adderall Diaries stars James Franco as an author struggling with writer’s block, which could be the inspiration for my deconstruction of an opening to this recap. The film is based on the memoir of the same title by Stephen Elliott. Franco’s version of Elliott deals with drug addiction (mostly Adderall), a Bdsm fetish that could ruin a burgeoning relationship,

Watchers on the Wall: 'Game of Thrones' and the Crumbling Barrier Between TV and Movies

There's surely no better place than an IMAX screen to watch a story about a 700-foot-high wall.

But the announcement this week that the two most recent "Game of Thrones" episodes (the epic ice battle episode "The Watchers on the Wall" and the shocking Season 4 finale "The Children") and a Season 5 trailer are coming to IMAX screens on Jan. 23 brings to mind another wall under assault -- the increasingly academic wall between movies and TV.

Granted, it makes sense for HBO to give theatergoers a healthy helping of its popular swords-and-skin fantasy series. After all, as large as George R.R. Martin's saga looms in pop culture chatter, there's still a majority of Americans who don't subscribe to the premium cable channel and haven't seen the show. The IMAX event is a good way to mobilize both newbies and longtime fans and to get both groups primed for this spring's new season.

From 'Big' to 'Marley & Me': We weigh in on TV's remake fad
I generally pay as much attention to the broadcast network development season as I do to the baseball draft. Though the shows that actually survive development are much closer to airing chronologically than most baseball draftees are to the majors, the winnowing process is just as brutal in both cases. On average, a given network will hear 3-400 pitches a year, order scripts for 60-70 of them, make 8-12 pilots and put roughly between a half dozen and a dozen of them on the air. So I’ve usually found development not worth worrying about until shows are actually ordered to series and scheduled. That said, it’s been tough to ignore this fall’s development season, where it seems like every day for the past few weeks, my Twitter feed has blown up a few times an afternoon with news of a familiar movie or TV property being adapted

Why TV is Looking to the Big Screen For New Ideas

In Hollywood, familiarity breeds content. That's been especially true in recent weeks as TV writers and executives raid film libraries, looking to adapt movies into primetime series.

Among projects now in development: CBS' take on the Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker buddy-cop comedy Rush Hour (this time from Cougar Town's Bill Lawrence) and a comedy based on Paul Weitz's 2004 feature In Good Company. NBC is rebooting two comedies, Real Genius and Problem Child, as well as creating a sequel to Marley & Me.

"Marley and Me" Becomes A TV Series

NBC has picked up "Marley & Me," a single-camera comedy sequel series to the hit 2008 comedy-drama film starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson.

The 20th Century Fox TV-produced project has received a put pilot commitment with the original film's director David Frankel on board to direct the potential pilot. Jenny Bicks ("Sex and the City") will write the script.

The original film followed John and Jenny Grogan, a couple who take in a puppy as they consider parenthood. This follow-up has them and their kids moving back to Florida where John can take up his newspaper column once again.

A stray puppy ends up on their doorstep and they are forced to adopt it, naming the pooch Marley as the unimaginative cheapskates opt to re-use the original Marley's old leash and tags on her.

The "destructive and delightful" pooch will shed light on the emotional pains of the family, their neighbors
